Well we are up against Notts County and boy do we need a thumping win! Notts county's form LlWLllWl > GD -13 Shrewsbury's form lWlDlWDl > GD -3 County's top scorers are: McGregor - 7 Arquin - 4 Haynes - 4 Injuries for us include Taylor who's out for 2-3 three weeks, Bradshaw has a bug and has a note off his mum, 16 other players have injured their pride. Parry is fit and available to start Let's hope that we have a confidence boosting win for Shrewsbury with a mega goal thriller similar to the game played last Tuesday night at the Meddah. Come on you Blues, Breathe on 'Em Salop Pop your thoughts and opinions below. Addendum - Just had a look at county's squad - 10 strikers, 15 midfielders, 6 defenders to choose from. I know they're bottom of the table but at least they have competition for places!!!
my glass is half empty on this game. county have the squad to improve. i forsee a late goal seperating the teams pengwern athletic 0 county gaol 1 prove me wrong town, floreat salopia
KDS.....is that going to be the scoring order? I'd be pretty pi**ed off if I got taken off after 28 minutes having scored a hattrick!!!!! Glad to see you're optimistic or drinking heavily!
One to watch No.20 Campbell-Ryce County fans think he's greedy - but at Gillingham he was a real pain. ( I really don't know how we managed to win ) When he was substituted he was given the biggest applause ( from home fans ) I have known for an 'away' player that I've known. He's wasted at County ! I hope you beat County - I am banking on them and Crewe as being two of the 4 teams that need to be worse than the Gills this season in order to survive in L1. ( goodness knows where the other two teams will come from )
Cheers for the update AlwaysRight, will keep an eye out for him. KDS / Metashrew taken off after 28 mins? Injuries have been updated based on Beebs preview.
Apologies......my weak attempt at joke......however, I'll bet no STFC forward scores a Hattrick let alone in less than 30 mins!
Surely it is time for us to have something go for us - I predict 2-1 to Town with Ugwu and Macalinden our scorers in front of 5100 less than delirious fans.
Well done to town on getting the result. After a little bit of pressure for the initial ten minutes we seemed to have a good game. Their number 20 (as mentioned above) was their only real threat. The squad played well together with the back four especially doing a good job. A welcome return for Jones who looked solid and is a contender for MoM. Reach and Parry did a good job and sometimes even seemed to act as a pair to help contain their no20. CM pairing of Wildig and Summerfield looked pretty good, Wildig getting subbed for possible ligament damage is a real shame but Wroe came on to replace and although I didn't notice him too much we didn't seem too troubled. The midfield all seemed willing to bring the ball forward when possible and the front two caused plenty of trouble yet failed to shoot early on! Ugwu looks a real threat and seems to sit deeper than McAlinden, but he showed inexperience by sometimes trying someting too fancy, slow to get back onside after a run, or being selfish. He looks like he will develop into a good player if coached well. McAlinden also showed some good quality up front and again seemed to take one too many steps with the ball on occasion. Both will come good for us but I hope that it will be sooner rather than later!! Sounds like Wildig is out until at least end of January if not longer, hope he has a speedy recovery and comes back stronger.
I thought MOM was between Woods and Jones but I would just give it to Woods for his fantastic clearance off the line while lying on the ground. I thought we could not have complained if County had got a draw as the game was quite even and open but both sides were very wasteful in front of goal. Ugwu showed some promise but is still very raw and Macalinden needs to learn to shoot after the first or second touch rather than the third or fourth. We deserved a break after two less than inspiring away performances and the three points are very welcome. It would be even better if we could follow it up with the same against Oldham but they will be confident after their thumping cup win against us this season.
Certainly would have complained if County got a draw. They never really threatened until the last few minutes with the Woods stop and another block. I lost count of the number of excellent opportinities that we spurned-Ugwu on at least 5 occasions including hitting the bar, Wroe shooting wide and also a powder puff effort, Jacobson heading over the bar and another timid effort, McAlindon failing to shoot or failing to pass etc. Still, at least we were creating chances.
The key things to take from the game is that the strikers, although not always, were getting into positions to shoot. Also the defense cleared balls out and didn't sit too deep at the end. That's an improvement!
it may not be pretty football, but town are in 14th place and only 8 points from the play offs. can we knock oldham over and dare to dream? floreat salopia! get back soon wildig and congratulations graham on 50 years in the game and 35 years in management.
KDS, I would beg to differ about County - according to BBC stats they had more possession (52%) , more corners (9 to our 6), more shots on goal and only one fewer shot on target. We cleared a header from a corner off our line in the first half and were also lucky to get away with it when the ref disallowed a goal in the first half from another of their corners. I think it was a very even-stevens game and we should probably not get carried away with a narrow victory (admittedly very welcome) against a side who have managed only one point from nine away games this season.
Possession stats often mean nothing. It's what you do with it that counts as has been pointed out to me on many occasions. Just think how much space our forwards had compared to theirs. I am sure that Notts defenders would have been congratulated in giving away corners had they been anywhere near to tackling our front players. Defender's jobs on the line are to clear the ball and as for the disallowed goal the ref had blown before it entered the net, so strictly speaking, not even a disallowed goal (and there were few if any complaints).
KDS, I do agree we had some good chances (and probably on balance better chances) but to say they rarely threatened before the last few minutes is not correct as Weale made a very good save after a couple of minutes and they also scraped the crossbar in the second half before we scored apart from the other chances I mentioned. I thought Ugwu was a bit unlucky with his shot that came down from the bar and his clever back flick but he did set up the goal and perhaps he will learn from the couple of clear-cut situations he wasted.
