http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896...tle-united-braced-for-academy-funding-setback what do yous make of this? Dont know how reliable the source is but if true cant be good!
It seems a little bizarre to me that our academy is not seen as being up to scratch...We've just spent millions on new facilities, our coaching staff can boast the names of Beardsley, Joyce and Watson (all of whom have been involved over the past few years) reached the QF of the FA Youth Cup and did well in the league. Just read that the academy don't train at little Benton, but we're building a new facility soon...Perhaps that has something to do with it?
Worrying if true but sure Mike Ashley believes in the importance of the academy so will make sure any problems are corrected as soon as possible to gain top status and not before time. Too many good local youngsters (North Tyneside) head to 5under1and academy rather than Newcastle already.
Thought he was going to improve the youth system, so on the basis of nevfur's comment I would say this is definitely not true.
In terms of goal.com....What a load of camel ****. We may 'lose' £200k a year... Now to the (former) fat man. As for cherry picking players... They aren't slaves, they choose... (I.e a Geordie will favour us). Lets not even go as far as talking about European law... Hopefully just a non story...
Unfortunately at the moment too many Geordies not getting the chance to choose us and 5under1and picking them up. At the end of the day lads are excited at getting picked up by any academy and rightly so but the Mackems stealing a march in the area at the moment. Newcastle scouts seem to huddle warmly around their mates at the same top junior clubs forgetting that for many reasons top young players turn out for junior clubs at ALL levels not just Wallsend and Cramlington etc at the top. 5under1and are doing this and reaping the rewards and sadly their academy has a better reputation than ours at the moment.
To be fair that isn't a new thing, remember a few years back Newcastle never looked at Ben Alnwick yet he lived in the same place as John Carver.
