Fantastic videos, had me in tears. They certainly know how to promote horse racing in the States. The speed at which he passed the field when he went from last to first made it look like the others were going the other way, and the way he won that last leg of the triple crown was just unbelievable. I presume he never raced on turf.
According to Wiki Ron, Secretariat's last two races were on the turf. He won the Man O' War Stakes over 12f stopping the clock in a new record, 2:24:8, a time not since beaten. He then went to the Woodbine turf where he contested the Canadian International Stakes over 13F. He won by 6.5 lengths.
I'm not going to knock Secretariat as he was quite clearly a stunning horse. However, as others have said it is difficult to compare track records as they are on difgferent surfaces and you always have to consider how the race was actually ran. As for the fact that the record stood for 31 years, are ther any serious stuidents who can tell us the different track records in the UK? If, for example, a horse broke the track record at yarmouth 40 years ago and it still stands i doubt we;d be saying he was the greatest of all time....... When Sea the Stars retired J A Mcgrath wrote that comparisons across the age are odious as certain horses need to be meausred in so many more ways than lengths and times and ratings. I would say this is also true of Secretariat (who i am not in any way trying to comapre to STS)
Great footage Eddie of a real racing legend..many thanks for providing a hiatus in the Frankel love in and proving that there were special racehorses before 2011.
