Families first at Stadium of Light

With building a strong fanbase for the future high on the agenda, Sunderland is creating a bespoke 'Family Zone' in the South East area of the stadium, designed to encourage and welcome the next generation of Sunderland supporters.

Bold, brightly coloured décor, complimented by a range of activities tailored specifically for young fans, will enhance the overall matchday experience for families.

A realistic pricing structure also means that an adult and child can enjoy a full season of top flight football in the new 'Family Zone' for just £499, with seats for any additional children priced at just £99.

Work will begin on the re-vamp in the summer and youngsters are being encouraged to have their input in the design process.

The club is running a competition through its junior supporters club, where youngsters will be asked to draw a picture showing their favourite things about matchdays at the Stadium of Light.

The winning entry will then be turned into a special piece of artwork which will adorn the stadium concourse area.

SAFC chief executive Margaret Byrne said: "Keeping football affordable for families has always been a key aim for us here at Sunderland. It is something that families enjoy together and we want to encourage as many young fans, through sensible pricing and providing an environment that welcomes young people and their families."

The creation of the 'Family Zone' is one of a number of schemes Sunderland has developed for its many thousands of junior supporters.

Last summer, following direct consultation with young fans, the 24-7 junior supporters club was given a brand new look - renaming it the 'Junior Black Cats' and making it completely free to join - unlike the majority of football clubs, which charge young supporters a membership fee.

The new-look club saw membership broken down into three distinct age groups - Mini Black Cats (0-3 years), Young Black Cats (4-11 years) and Team Black Cats (12-16 years).
Membership levels have soared to well over 30,000 this season, a huge increase on previous numbers.

A special section of safc.com, the club's official website, is dedicated to Junior Black Cats and young supporters are kept up to date with all the latest news from SAFC, as well as opportunities to enter exclusive competitions, attend events and take advantage of exclusive ticket offers.

You use the same cards as last season mate...Unless you are a new season card holder, then they will be sent out before the season starts.

THERE was a leap in Sunderland season card sales yesterday in the wake of the Premier League fixture list for 2012/13 being published.

A programme which begins and ends for Sunderland in London – with first Arsenal and last Spurs – contains highlights like glamour trips to the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea and offers a Boxing Day game against Man City at the Stadium of Light and New Year’s Day trip to Liverpool, as well as derbies against Newcastle in October and April.

And fixtures like those immediately boosted fans’ desire to be there for all 19 home games at the Stadium of Light.

Season card sales had already got off to a good start for Sunderland during the early renewal period between February and April – boosted by Sunderland’s stirring FA Cup run to the last eight of the competition.

And the club is now firmly on course for bumper season card returns before the start of the new campaign.

SAFC chief executive Margaret Byrne said: “We naturally see an increase in enquiries once the season has structure and people can work matches around their holidays and other commitments but we’re delighted with what we’ve seen over the last 24 hours.

“We’re currently looking at our highest levels of season cards since the club returned to the Premier League in 2007.”
