GARETH BARRY has emerged as a shock summer target for Tottenham.
The Londoners want the Manchester City and England midfielder to provide cover in next season’s push for a top-four spot and the Champions League.
Barry, 32, has one year left on his deal and would cost around £3.5million.
Spurs’ highly-rated Brazilian Sandro is still on his way back to fitness after suffering a serious knee injury in January.
Interest in Barry raises big questions about the future of Scott Parker under boss Andre Villas-Boas at White Hart Lane.
Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio is tracking combative midfielder Parker, 32, after the Black Cats flirted with relegation last season.
Meanwhile, Etihad flop Roque Santa Cruz is a target for Hamburg after his release by City.
The Paraguayan striker cost £17.5m from Blackburn in 2009 but spent last season on loan at Malaga.
Before joining Rovers Santa Cruz, 31, was at Bayern Munich for eight years.
A Hamburg spokesman said: “He fits squarely into our requirements.”

I wanted him back in january, Still a class act, would add a wealth of experience to what's going to be a very young squad.

He is a London lad, a move back to WHU or Fulham is more realistic i would imagine

Barry’s future at the Etihad is uncertain, with Manuel Pellegrini set to be unveiled in the next 24 hours as the club’s new manager and sweeping changes to their squad likely to follow.

Parker, 33 this year, had an injury-hit season, but Sunderland are interested and Barry, left, would fit the bill as an experienced, less fragile replacement.

Agree with the experience to go with our young recruits as we probably only have JOS who is the real father figure and leader in the squad.

Barry/Parker etc do offer that leadership quality as well as being English.

Somebody is going spare this summer at City with their 2 new midfielders and possibly 3 if Isco signs, leaving your Barrys, Milners, Sinclairs wondering what to do.

Being a world cup year, Milner will want to play regular, our opportunity maybe? even if on loan.

Scott Parker has emerged as a target for Sunderland.

The Wearside club is being *re-vamped under manager Paolo Di Canio – and Parker could be his first high-profile English signing.

Di Canio has already secured three players on Bosman transfers and he is determined to bring in more new faces to ensure there is no repeat of last season’s relegation battle.

Central defender Valentin *Roberge and midfielders Cabral and Mobido Diakite will arrive at the Stadium of Light next month.

And they are the immediate result of two key appointments by Di Canio.

Roberto De Fanti is the new *Director of Football at the club while his *fellow Italian Valentino *Angeloni has joined Sunderland from Inter Milan as chief scout.

Parker has two years left on his contract at White Hart Lane but, at 32, Tottenham could well listen to offers around the £4million mark. Spurs have good cover in midfield with the likes of Sandro and Moussa Dembele.

And Parker might well relish the chance to play regular first team football if his chances at Tottenham are to be restricted.

The one stumbling block could be Parker’s Newcastle connection.

He played at St James’s Park before moving to West Ham and then *Tottenham.

But if Sunderland *decide that would not be handicap, Parker could be their midfield general next season.

If Sunderland decide not to pursue their *interest, there will be no shortage of clubs willing to take Parker. Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp is keen to bring his team straight back to the Premier League after relegation in May and would love to have Parker at Loftus Road.

It was Redknapp who signed him for Tottenham during his spell at White Hart Lane and he is a huge fan of Parker’s professionalism and influence.

The problem could be persuading Parker to drop down a division.

Meanwhile, Liverpool will meet *Sunderland’s £10m *valuation for goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.

Anfield offers ranging from £6.5m to £9m for the Belgian have been *rejected. But Kop chief executive Ian Ayre has postponed a scheduled trip to attend a football conference in Brazil to complete the deal.

Mignolet wants to “step up a level" after his crucial role in last season’s relegation battle, while Di Canio is happy with Republic of Ireland keeper Keiren Westwood.

England U19 international *Jordan Pickford, 19, will be back-up.

Don't think his Newcastle connection would affect the deal. He wasn't overly popular with some of our fans. He's a bit bland to say the least.

On his day granted . But his injuries and cards he picks up are worry .The manner in which he plays is great to see, but when a player like himself picks up a yellow I always wonder how much it effects there game . SOMetimes the decsions they make in the takcles they do, after the card they have received are school boy errors and make me cringe .
