Here’s a question for the forum ‘brains trust’. Since the turn of the century has a race dropped in stature and prestige as much as the ‘Bet365 Gold Cup’ (the old Whitbread)?!? I’m struggling to think of one.

Once a highlight of the entire NH campaign now it is struggling to even be the best race on that days Sandown card!

Probably the highest profile example - you could add in the old Racing Post Chase at Kempton and probably also the old "Mackeson" Gold Cup and "Bula Hurdle", all having suffered in prestige and standing due to multiple names changes around the sponsors. I fear the "Hennessy" might be heading the same way.

Without wanting to cause consternation in Chuckles Tower (or indeed any other forumite's abode), I am confidently predicting Altior's winning streak coming to an end in the Celebration Chase. In the prevailing conditions I can see my old favourite Sceau Royal doing him for speed after the last. Sandown on good ground is perfect for Sceau Royal (as witnessed by his sublime victory in the Henry VIII Novices chase in December 2017) and it will be a very different story to the bog of the Tingle Creek. 7/2 freely available people.

Not going with the other forum favourite, Vosnee Romanee?!? He seems to have been around for ever but is still only 8! Also seems better than ever as well.

I do fear you might be right about the old Hennessy by the way.

I think Vosne Romanee has been treated Leniantly with a capital "L" by the handicapper. In the last 12 months he has 3 wins and 2 seconds in 5 handicap chases (2 of them listed) but has gone up only 15lbs to his current perch of 151. I think that leaves him a stone short of being involved at the business end here.

Got to say, people, that I seriously like one of the old morrow.

GREAT BEAR (1.30 Haydock) – one of the best bred animals in training being by Dansili and out of Great Heavens who won the ’12 Irish Oaks and went off at just 6’s for that terms Arc (the dam is also a sister to the King George and Eclipse winner, Nathaniel). Great Bear won on debut at Wolverhampton, in November, and now commences his 3YO campaign in this novice affair. Is penalised for that win and has to concede weight all round, as a result, but I’d be very disappointed if he didn’t start his term with a convincing win of the morrow. After this I’ve no idea where the old boy will head but you can currently get 50/1 for The Derby. Potentially could be that good.

    Have a great weekend, crew.

I suspect Altior will not be risked on the ground Oddy, if it gets any firmer. Never raced on anything firmer than good

The tipsters are all over Apparate in Great Bear's race tomorrow. The Varian stable is in form but his run last season was nothing special. The 50/1 winner that day was awful next time and the beaten odds-on favourite for that day, Franz Kafka, still hasn't managed to get his head in front. The form of that Newbury race hasn't worked out well and Apparate is very short.

Great Bear's mother was a horse who landed a good treble for me when she was the third leg of bet I had on all Rothschild owned horses that day. It was a pretty modest race Great Bear himself won and only one winner came from it since, and that was as 1/10 Favourite. The RPR figures have Apparate rated higher but Great Bear has to concede 6 lbs. Apparate is odds on in some places and that looks poor value to me. The Gosden newcomer Make My Day is by Galileo out of unraced mare Posset but she was a full sister to Midday, who was a top notcher for Henry Cecil.

With the other big two in the betting not having done a lot so far it is tempting to go with the Gosden horse but it seems early doors for all these horses to be tackling a mile and a half this early in their careers. The Gosden horse in particular would normally have debuted at shorter and stepped up in distance and class if he were to be a really top prospect.

Proschema won the race for Dascombe last year but did not win thereafter, with an 8th at 50/1 in the St Leger his moment in the spotlight.

Will probably wait and see how the Gosden colt looks and what the odds of reward are before deciding to play or not.
