I'm pleased he overcame his demons to the extent that he's being considered for a new contract and got an England call up.
Yes it's heartwarming to see him getting his career back on track but he must consider a pay cut and shorter deal if he wants to stay with us.
If we are looking at giving FF a new contract having already given McCarthy a new contract then we can't be going for a new GK too which is disappointing, unless we think we can sell one of them having given them a new contract. Confucious.
Everyone is saying “shorter contract” - than what? His last one? I think it goes without saying that he won’t be getting a 5 year deal at 34 - anywhere. It is interesting phrasing as it implies that people think he has sat down for the same contract as last time - 5 years at whatever he is currently on Agreed on the reduced wages part which is probably why the tweet suggests it might not happen. I expect we offer 50-55k like McCarthy. Maybe a shade more. And probably for 2 years. If we are getting rid of either should both sign up it will be McCarthy. And it won’t be for much surely? Which potentially gives an accounting loss which we might not want? Not sure what value players with contract extensions are held at in the books
We should be offering at least what we offered McCarthy if we are going to offer him one. Otherwise we might as well not bother He will not sign a two year deal at 40k. Not least because if that is the wage level someone will likely give him three years for that. Or more than that for 2
Let someone else give him it then. I'd much rather he went if I'm honest but a backup keeper at his age should be worth 40k absolute max imo.
Neither keeper are good enough to be no one, depressing news for next season as was hoping for Johnstone or Henderson
Everyone assuming that McCarthy has signed a new contract off what Dan Sheldon said once. I'm dubious.
Dan Sheldon has said it more than once. Many more times. Also claiming that “everyone” is assuming that solely because of what Dan has said is simply a factually incorrect statement.
Well I haven’t seen anyone other than Sheldon mention it? I may be wrong, of course, but it seems very odd, seeing as it was first mooted a long time ago, that it hasn’t been announced in any official capacity.
I agree the lack of announcement is odd. But if the only other info someone was to have was something like third hand info that just so happens to line up with what Sheldon is saying then it makes sense that they aren’t bringing it up but are using it to inform their stance on this
