Coventry tickets on sale from tomorrow. £10 for adults, £5 for U18 if purchased before general sale. £15 for adults when on general sale and £20 on the day. £20 on the day is ****ing ridiculous really. Will put off a lot of people who may have decided to go at the last minute.
Coast are a Scottish band who were asked to write the song for Saints Aid when we were in administration in 2009.
Dark days indeed. Nice touch from the band though! I,ll see if I can get it played on Radio 2 (The volk show)
Always good to cast your mind back to those dark days when getting frustrated at our current mediocrity (not that we are that bad or anything). We've come a long way!!
https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/19861185.saints-southampton-football-club-remove-ted-bates-statue/ Not sure what to make of this - no idea what evidence they have to prove he knew.
Isn’t it suggested in the article? Mentions his name in the report. Words from the headteacher (who may or may not still be alive) I’m not sure the public will be told anyway
I am really getting annoyed by the destruction of our heritage and trying to change history because it had flaws in it. You cannot change history, you can only learn from it and destroying the evidence is burying it.
My feelings exactly. Just because there’s a chance that he “might have suspected ….” doesn’t mean he should be vilified. I have different feelings about statues glorifying slave traders, though, so maybe I’m wrong?
It depends whether the investigation found "he might have suspected it" or whether if found he very much knew about it and took know action. All due respect, the point about trying to "change history" is a load of crap. No one is trying to change history, nor are they denying the amazing things Ted did with Saints - if anything wit would actually be portraying history more accurately due to new information. If there is sufficient evidence he knew and took no action, how do you think the victims, some whose lives have been ruined, will feel that we celebrate a man who knew what was being done to them but decided to allow it to continue.
*****philes are notoriously devious and clever in hiding their actions, maybe he fooled Ted Bates who may well have investigated the allegations and concluded there was nothing to answer for. Or maybe another board member investigated, Ted wasn't running the entire club alone.
I don’t really feel like this belongs in that context, if it is true that the issues were reported to him and he rejected them and subsequently the victims want his statue gone then it should go. This isn’t like statues that represent people from centuries ago who were a product of their time, people are still alive who were directly impacted by this event. IF it turns out that he did enable a sex offender to run rampant at the club, despite warnings then unfortunately his face is no longer fit to represent the club, whether or not he was also manipulated ultimately he bore some level of responsibility for the safeguarding of children in the clubs coaching system and failed them. The ‘if’ is important though, I know we aren’t aware of the full picture.
I'm sorry but if he knew what was happening and turned a blind eye to it the statue has to go, it's as simple as that.
I'm with Tom. Different times I know, but still never right what ever times we live in. If he knew and ignored it, then the statue should go IMO. As to the slave traders statues - a different convo for a different thread maybe, but again we can learn from it and remove the statues without causing harm again IMO. Once you sit back and see what these people stood for and how they made their living then maybe celebrating them with a statue isn't wise. Different times I know and at the time not illegal, but immoral all the same.
If the statue is brought down it will be interesting to see who replaces him. Le Tissier has damaged his reputation with his idiotic views on Covid and vaccines. So I would go with Lawrie Mac or Markus.
