Because its our greatest collective fear!

I don't think he'll leave just yet, but maybe he's known for awhile who was going to replace him, and their available now to take the reigns and they might not be if the club doesn't act now.

well sadly , lots of things can happen behind the scene, that Sir Alex may not be aware of .. possibly a new information .. GOD know what?
    is 50-50 imo
but can see Moyes or jose ready to manage under Sir Alex guidance working together in a transactional period, especially if news are correct and Sir Alex will miss start of the season with that surgery he is having

Maybe the announcement is about his hip operation and who will be running the club in his absence, just a thought because he will be missing for quite a few games of the new season.

I'd want klopp.. That said I like Maureen too. Just find his football a bit stale. Too big a job for moyes. Wouldn't be gutted if it were him though I wouldn't be overjoyed either.

@Diego - That sounds like a reasonable explanation. Would there be a need to announce it though? Surely Phelan & staff would run team until he's back?

Would be a big blow to your chances of adding to 20 league titles if he does leave though. Chelsea & City will only get stronger IMO over the summer.

Ferguson has been the only manager able to stop City & Chelsea dominating over the last 10 years, I can't see any of his realistic replacements being able to do the same.

agreed, he already stated he got plans for next season as in summer spending too. These rumors just came in few hours ago, no one can expect a club to make a statement straight away.

can't believe some people are actually believing this, i remember last year i think it was the same newspaper i think was stating Sir Alex was planning to retire end of last season too. I;m sure, on friday, press conference i can see the headlines " Sir Alex denies retirement rumors".

i think it is that and the newspaper's are making a meal out of it for their headlines. Since we won the league Sir Alex has been saying he is planning for next season and already got few transfer targets he wishes to get.

i can't believe some people are believing this rubbish news. I know he can't go for ever but he ain't going this summer.

under his guidance .. Jose will be honored to manage the officially sport club brand no.1 in the world .. it is little price to have that luxury

now, will he do it or not? not sure .. he has a big ego but he always respect Sir Alex and i quote what he said " I don't call him Sir Alex or Mr. I just call him 'BOSS'"

As we're part listed on the stock exchange, anything like that will have to be announced to shareholders in advance.

That's probably what this whole thing is about - Utd have announced they are making a statement to the NYSE which will probably be that SAF will need to take some time off to recover from his op, or that Moyes is taking over as number 2. We can't make a statement to the media until the press conference as the info has to be released to the markets first. So the media are doing their usual and making up anything they can because they think something big might be announced.

    If SAF does go:

I would love Klopp as I think he's a quality manager
I would love Mourinho to see the reactions of the Chelsea fans
I would love Moyes to see the reactions of Liverpool fans when he wins a few trophies :)

Breaking news on Sky is that United have confirmed that he retired. So ends the greatest success story in English football history.

    Fixed for you.

Think you lot might go for Jurgen Klopp, unless you're sticking to British.

Gutted he's gone but I think we saw it coming.

Let the speculation begin about who is coming in but I think it's already nailed on to be Moyes <ok>

    Wow.

Be interesting to hear his reasons. I was sure he'd want to win at least one more E.C???

let the manager merry go round commence.

Rafa will be free soon BTW!!!
