Couldn't care less, Englands reputation has to be at an all time low anyway, best time to become manager.
It makes little difference I think. Our players skill sets and talent are so out of touch with modern international football, that the media sponsored impossible job is now an impossible job due to the quality of English players
I think Redknapp would have been a better appointment because he's a better manager. That doesn't mean to say Hodgson is a bad choice. He probably has a lot of qualities that suit International management. But I think what tipped it for him were maybe factors other than the on the pitch stuff (I'm sure I read Bernstein refer to it as a 'package' somewhere). For instance, the compensation issue. Also, the FA are very big on two things: Firstly, they want the England manager to embrace the whole St George's Park project and more or less work there for the majority of the time. Hodgson ticks that box whereas Harry maybe doesn't. Also, they want to promote more internal coaches into the England set-up (like Stuart Pearce) rather than have every new manager bring in his entourage - it's almost certain that Redknapp would have wanted Bond, Jordan, Allen etc. with him whereas Hodgson never really has a fixed assistant he works with. In one way, you could say it's good the FA are thinking in terms of the future but I think they should get the best manager available - if they wanted they could have instead offered Roy the Technical Director job that is also available if they liked those added benefits. Having said that, I will still back him and wish him well because he's one of the game's nice guys and I want the national team to do well.
putting my most cynical head on, i have to ask, is it down to money, Hodgson being by far the cheaper choice, nowhere near the compo that Harry would have cost?? Also have the FA found themselves yet another yes man?? Plus Harry does have a somewhat dubious reputation in some peoples eyes But i guess like alot of people im not really that bothered,as lets be honest, we dont stand a cat in hells chance of competing with the world best teams, we just dont have the ability...........
I struggled to choose between we're ****ed or couldn't care less. Think he's a **** manager but really don't expect anything from the national team nowadays anyway
Has done well at every club side (plus Switzerland) he has been at, with just the one exception. If I was waking up to find he had been appointed Leicester manager, I would have been delighted. England manager ? not so sure of cos of his inability to deal with mega egos at Liverpool. Havent really been a huge national supporter since Weller Worthington were in the national team, so not really bothered.
He is ideal at bringing the best out of players, and i agree with above comments about dropping the ones who don't perform. Who knows, he might even get Konchesky into the squad.
does it really matter? he won't be kicking or heading one ball.. has no real time to work with players so whats the point? the players are on the evidence , just not good enough..
The Cockney media in Fleet Street wanted Haaarrryy as he is "one of them", It's a "London thing" you see. But when you look closely at is record he as only ever won one trophy and it took him 25 years in club management to do that. His record does not stand comparison with Martin O'Neill's and as he was unavailable for the job, Roy Hodgson's credentials are as good as any one else's. Lets all give the bloke a chance
My view; for what it's worth 1) This is not the first time that the FA have gone against the 'people's choice' - whilst the reasons may be similar (the old farts at the FA needding to justify their existence and not wanting somebody in charge that would question their relevance and credibility in today's game) there is a distinct difference. Brian Clough was a genius - admittedly with an ego to match - but the players around during his time might, under his management, have had a genuine chance of major tournament success. Roy Hodgson is inheriting a distinctly average bunch at a world level - perhaps with some promising younger players, but with only Rooney currently anywhere near world class. 2) You can't fault Hodgson's record of moulding average players into teams that over achieve - in that sense he is PERFECT for this current England squad 3) The Press reaction is nothing short of disgusting in it's negativity and, from some quarters, vitriol. They have picked upon his speech impediment (The Sun today) and are dragging up that he played in South Afica back in 1973 during the Apartheid regime - what relevance does that have to anything? Good luck to him - he is going to need it.
Roy Hodgson has a good record of leading mediocre teams to brilliant results - perfect for the England job!
Quite agree...I feel a bit sorry for managers when they have to take the blame for something those highly paid millionaires on the pitch do or rather fail to do. I sometimes wonder if the footballers perform poorly because they know the manager will be sacked...and they won't.
Good luck Roy as come the first game the tabloids think you should have won 78-0 and you draw they'll slaughter you! Poisoned chalice job
Is Redknapp really the people's choice? He wasn't mine. I don't like him and his clearly as crooked as a nine-bob note. His record isn't that great either - always likes to go where the money is but rarely achieves much.
Certainly he is as far as the London based papparazzi are concerned ... I wanted Sven back! .. weeeeeeelllllllllllllllllllllllllll .... not least to see whether he could bag a few wags ... only chance we have of making any headlines!!!.
