If I remember correctly (quite possibly not) we only had three and they scored all five goals between them - Gerrard, Owen and Heskey. Hamann scored Germany's too
I said after the tournament in 2010 that it was time to drop the 'golden generation' and start picking younger players that would be around longer. The likes of James, A.Cole, J.Cole, Rio, Terry, Carragher (brief comeback at the time), Gerrard, Owen, were either closing in or on the the wrong side of thirty and all had had their chances over the last four or five tournaments and done nothing together. There was others too such as G.Johnson, Rooney, Crouch, Defoe, King, etc that were either not going to be around for the long term or not performing (see former two).
Why would that be odd when the title of the thread is about Rooney. It would be more odd if I didn't focus on them
I think this thread goes to show we can actually have a thread about a manu player without salting the crap out of him. Sound. Not my fav player, has a lot to do to turn it around but you gotta start somewhere. You cannot deny, if he hit top form for England it is only good for ye all, this rivalry carrying into England where you want a man u player to fail as England captain... not great. When watching Ireland it never enters my head about who any player plays for. Though at the moment I couldn't tell you who everyone plays for BBF you numpty!
Nick Barmby aswell so 4 overall. The key thing was Gerrard, Owen and Heskey knew each others games inside out and made a significant part of the attack.
Gerrard and Beckham interchanged superbly too, made it very difficult for the opposition to pick them up. Throw Scholes in the middle with G.Neville providing width from RB and that team was always going to be a threat. That one game showed what England could have done had we not tried to accommodate the best eleven insividuals to form a 'team'!!!
It was just a one off result really. Lets remember England needed a last minute equaliser against Greece to top that group. And that was a very poor German side compared to their other sides. Yet they still made the final while England yet again went out in the quarter finals.
Thats all true but it showed what we were capable of. We never reproduced it though so as you say it was a one off.
without (1966) win world cup with (2010) dont win world cup I will see what I can find out with stats
