Why has Corrie worked for 60 years? 'Cos great actors and actresses have created believable characters who are able to explore aspects of human experience. Hilda Ogden was amongst the greatest of those characters. RIP Jean Alexander.
Stan and Hilda Ogden were, in my opinion, one of the greatest character-couples in all of English literature. Including those in Shakespeare. Consistently brilliant, real, poignant, and hilarious. R.I.P.
We all knew a real life Hilda, didn't we? Hard on the exterior, soft as **** & a heart of gold on the inside. Happy with the simple things but always dreaming of their big break. She played the nosy old battle axe character with a style & panache that made the viewer empathise with her rather than becoming apathetic to the character. If my maths are right she must have started playing Hilda when she was still in her 30s. RIP Jean Alexander.
Fellow old gits may remember Joan Marie Johnson or, at least, The Dixie Cups: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/joan-marie-johnson-chapel-of-love-singer-dead-at-72-w444354
