Ferdinand thinks anything he says is gospel, as shown many times on twitter. To be quite frank the two guys were arguing and Terry used something that people class as racist, so therefore Terry must be in the wrong.

He then says he's free to laugh at whatever he likes and people shouldn't judge. When you are in the public eye and a role model to many young people, you should be mindful that your words have influence on others.

He's so incredibly backwards, he might as well have said, "dat cracker be trippin' man" or similar. He is allowed to find 'choc ice' amusing, afterall it's a free country but by replying AND condoning it when he knows fine well he ha the attention of millions, plain dumb.

He's missed the opportunity to apologise to his fans, I kinda hope the FA throw the book at him.

Wasn't the term "choc ice" used to reference Cole being a fake and sell out though not his skin colour? Could a white man that's fake be referred to as a Choc Ice or is it just a derogatory term for black people?

IMO blacks should not be allowed to say the N word, or any racist language, if Whites aren't allowed.

Quite agree, though a lot of it depends on the tone and what has gone before, for instance if it is used in a jovial manner and the person is fine with it no problem, in this case Ferdinand and Terry were trading insults suddenly its controversial because Terry uses the N word.

The reason people don't like the word being used by white people is because of the racist overtones. The word is inherently racist and associated with some of the worst aspects of modern culture.

If a black person uses the word it's context changes completely as there cant be any racist connotations. In fact, there is a linguistic history of the word being used by black people to one another in recognition of racism they have experienced in the past.

Whether meant to be or not. A white person using racist terms to a black person opens the possibility of what they say being interpreted as racist, which is why people in a public arena, eg. John Terry and Suarez can not say it. Black people should be mindful of using it, as they generally seem to be in football (but obviously not in rap) but due to the entirely different connotation when they say it, it is permissible.

    Ok.

    A) I wasn't talking about the choc ice thing. I was specifcally talking about the 'n' word.

    B) If you think black people can be racist towards each other fair enough. But you're totally wrong. If a white man calls a black man a derogatory name he opens himself up to accusations of racism. When a black man does it to another black man it can't be racism. And here's why, courtesy of the Oxord English dictionary...

    Definition of racism
    noun
    [mass noun]
the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races:
    theories of racism
prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s own race is superior:
    a programme to combat racism

That's right, key to the concept of racism is the idea of difference. Hence it can't exist between black people. So if a white person says something it is racist, if a black person does it can not be, literally impossible by definition.

Are you saying all black people are the same? <laugh>

You know what guys, there are pretty good points either side of the coin. I tend to agree more with Acuna-matata, but it's a complex issue.

The problem is we are in danger, in my opinion, of just throwing round "He's racist! You're racist! We're all racist!" for everything said now. I thought a choc ice was an ice-cream, why are we getting bent out of shape? If anything he's saying Cole is cheap and relatively inferior with luxury items, such as Magnum... Bet you nobody calls him world class outside of England now, anyway <laugh>

I think it's a bit silly getting into the politics of the race issue with regards certain words on a football forum anyway, given that none of us are fully acquainted with the full history of the terms, the aspects of creolization and the tones with which certain words are employed by certain types of people.
For what it's worth though, I think Race is supposed to be a "hate" crime, and as such saying "black ****" is racist (and not advisable to say back to a player, even if he accused you first and you simply repeated it), some obscure reference to "choc ice" is just pathetic, and two people (whether white or black, or red, or purple, or orange) calling each other "******" as a joke or informal greeting is completely neutral.

Overall, we all pick girlfriends/boyfriends/bros/hoes based on looks, and that includes race sub-consciously or otherwise. That's as far as it should go. We are all scuttling little ants in the universe trying to have a decent life, let's just get a long eh?

But if someone called you a white ****, would you honestly be bothered by it? Would you consider them being racist?

I have to say I wouldn't. I might slightly offended at being called a **** but sticks and stones applies there. In terms of someone using something observational to describe me (my white skin) I find it hard to be offended. To be honest if I got called honky, milky bar or any other so called racist slur, I just wouldn't give a ****.

I have to agree on the general point of we just now seem to be using the word racism in a very broad sense. Personally I think this is unhelpful in actually stamping what I actually see as racism. Its getting bandied about so readily that we are beginning to focus on very minor incidents and blowing the problem up into something it isn't. I think its counter productive.

Rio is thick as **** and a very dislikeable character. Every bit as much as Terry to be fair given his chequered past. But him calling Ashley Cole a choc ice is not the end of the world for me. Cole seems to have a very mature outlook and has really shown people that there is no need to be over sensitive. To be honest I've grown to like him a little more over the years. Still shouldn't have done the dirty on Cheryl though the little twat. Its wrong to treat someone like that when they have such a fantastic arse and face you'd like to mess on.

If the person was a non-white I would certainly consider that they were being racist. If it was used by a white person, I would probably mainly be puzzled.

How offended I got would depend on a lot of things. On a good day I might just think they were omplete prats, but definitely racist prats.

How about if some one called you a thick geordie twat ? Maybe someone with a nice posh accent ? Anyone not think that they were being abused based on their ethnicity ?

Not really what I was getting at. Obviously the law says that they are being racist and therefore they should not use the term. Just as I would not call someone a black **** becasue it is deemed unacceptable.

I just personally don't think calling me "white ****" is a racist term regardless what the law says. Why? Because I am white and see no difference to than if they called me a "a hairy ****" or "a skinny ****" etc. Its just observational for me and part of where I think the lines have become very blurry.

As for being called a "thick geordie twat", I'd have no problem with the Geordie bit given thats what I am and its just an identifying tag they've stuck in there, but might take exception to being called thick and a twat. Even then I'd probably just laugh at them. This is where people get too sensitive to me thinking that they are associating you being a geordie with being thick. They're not they're associating probably your accent with being Geordie. Its accurate.
