If the current form table (last 6 games) were to be repeated, the table after 45 games would look like this: 20..Millwall 46 21..Coventry 42 ----------------- 22..Bristol City 41 23..POMPEY 40 24R.Doncaster 35 Final day fixtures Coventry away to Saints Bristol City away to Burnley Pompey away to Forest. Pompey would have to win and hope that neither Bristol City or Coventry do likewise. Thoughts?
There is an amazing correlation with 2005 and who could blame anyone stripey for not wanting to have a reverse of what happened then. It may well come down to the last match but I suspect that we will not have to rely on what happens at St Mary's on the 28th to either stay up or be relegated. They may well be presented with the League Championship Trophy that day and so the players and the vast majority of the fans will not want to lose. By the way, if you do pick the trophy up that day, just remember that it is only the first time your name will get engaved on it, whereas ...
It's a bit difficult to win the Championship trophy when you are in the premiership for decades consecutively!
The premiership has only been around for 20 years........the championship trophy is the Div 1 trophy from pre 1992. But having never won it before we can let you off for not knowing that.......
Channon, I would have thought you of all people would be knowledgable enough to know that it is the original League Championship Trophy that you could be winning in four weeks - the one we won in 1949, 1950 and 2003, and that you nearly won in 1984. It's a much nicer looking trophy than the garish monstrosity they have in the Premiership.
How silly of us not to remember a trophy you won back in 1949 and 1950. In 2003 we were far more pre-occupied with trying to win the FA Cup. Legitimately I may add...
The point which you have to remember is that Saints spent all but 3 seasons in the top flight from 1966 to 2005, I think Pompey had a few more opportunities to win it once it had dropped a division, yes? I don't really worry too much what happen before I was born. I will be 50 this year and I think my memory is of Pompey being a team from the leagues below us- which for most of my life it was!
.....but that wasnt "decades in the premiership" was it? - 13 years does not warrent a pluralisation of "Decade" when I last checked
OK, I will accept your point that if Saints spent 36 out of 39 seasons in the "top flight" during that period, it is not exactly the same as what I said. Satisfied? Presumably, those teams who won the Carling Premiership, should not automatically consider that they have any history in the Barclays Premiership by this logic. Come on Mike, 36 almost uninterupted years. Not too shabby, surely?
I was only pulling your chain Channon - you know me as a level headed fellow! I am a Pompey fan first and a football fan second - 36 uninterupted years is an impressive haul I can only agree!
Blimey Channon, it's Friday not Monday morning - have you got a hangover or something? I have gone on record as saying I think you will win the Championship and then tried to point out that the trophy you will get is the Football League Champion's one with real history and one worth having in your trophy cabinet. I am even older than you and my memory is of being below you until the last few years; good years but the fact we cocked it up and are now looking back up at you give me far more reason to be sore. Yet my intentions were magnaminous.
For me the pity is that our two clubs can't have good times at the same time. When one of us is on the up the other is always heading the other way. Come to think of it, maybe it is your fault we hit the slump when we did because you were having an up spell.
I really don't think with regards to us playing Coventry that you will have recourse to bemoan our failure to beat them.
Oh I am not sore! Sorry if I came across that way. I am afraid that I may have spent too much time reading the threads started by my "special" friend on your board and it's enough to cause anyone to despair!
