I dont think so, Pepe has looked uninterested for a while and a lot of fans have been calling for his spot to be challenged anyway

Good servant yes but it does matter about Barca as thats why we got Mingolet in the first place. Players always run a mile leaving the club however and Pepe would've done the same if Barca had got in touch. Fair enough, its his home etc but we acted first so im not sure its shoddy at all, I think its not being left in the lurch for once

If he goes to Napoli and has a great season we still own him, how will a brill season for them reduce his value?

Oh I though it was the other way around. Maybe we thought Barca still might come in for him?

I dont know, but what I do know is that imo Reinas looked off the boil a while and needed a challenge. I like him and it will seem weird with a new GK but im happy to give Mingolet the chance there.

I just hope Mingolet for obvious reasons proves to be just as good and better

The biggest issue for me isn't a sentimental one at all. We have a limited budget. We've spent a third of it strengthening a position we didn't need to this summer. We should have known weeks before signing Ming that Barca wouldn't be after Reina this summer. Why not speak to Ming but wait until Jan at least to do the deal or better...offer Ming to Rafa for a year to get the CL experience he won't get here <whistle>

Its not is it, but making sure the club comes first rather than being left in the lurch is fine with me

And we discuss all this as fans but if BR thinks Mingolet is a better gk then let him do his own thing, get his team together.

You dont get back to the top by holding onto players that have been good servants but arent at the level the manager/team requires

I thought I understood the reasons for him going on loan, but this says it all. I am so disappointed, just a bitter taste in my mouth.

To all future Liverpool players, don't be loyal to the club. It doesn't guarantee that you will be looked after. I doubt Riena's name was in one of the envelopes.

Not sure what to make of the few digs he makes at the club. I'm sorry Pepe we all love you and you've served us excellently since arriving but you can't command loyalty and respect when you are outright saying you want to be at another club, whether it's your home or not. Divided loyalties and heads being turned do not work out in the long run for football clubs.

I personally think this is some of our more astute business in the market this season. We've signed a keeper who looks like a potential superstar, temporarily offloaded our other disinterested, high-wages keeper to a club with a manager he respects with the intention selling him to the club he's been idling to move to for the last 2 years next season.

    What's the problem?

All the best José Manuel (Pepe) Reina. Definitely the best Liverpool goalkeeper in my lifetime <ok>

He couldve turned Napoli down though and fought for his place

I dont think it says that dont be loyal in future, youve got to be loyal and good!

Not saying hes been absolutely ****e but even though he picked up last yr he was still some way off what we've known him to be hasnt he? Or is it just me?!

Well if he's going to have a brill season I'd rather he had it here. The point is announcing to the world we can't afford his wages knocks millions off his value overnight (ala Mandy last year).

For me had the two keepers still been here I'd have taken Pepe any day of the week. I've never got the impression he's disinterested. His form has suffered as others have from the constant changes of managers/styles/coaching staff etc but he was excellent the second half of last season.

I think this is a brave decision by the club and it's one that I respect.

Reina was flirting with Barca and we were all resigned to losing him. The club were proactive in signing his replacement at a reasonable price. Alternatively, we could have persisted with Reina for one more year, all the other clubs would then know that we were in the market and then inflate their prices. Who knows?

that is also fair, it is limited so that the way of things but I think its not a great message. I contrast it to alonso going... somehow i don't see reina sitting in the stands at anfield when the winter break comes around in italy this year... do you?

It would have been nicer for all had this been amicable. I don't think, despite what rodgers says, the best interests of any party have been served... bar maybe mingolet of course... In 3 years time it maght look great.... Or we could be grinding our teeth watching CL with reina in it and us not.. who knows.

the point that you live or die by decisions is well made... the current lfc regime is stacking up quite a few decisions by now. As a fan i just want the positive for the club... and that would be a rondalo type sale for 20mil to barca, not a kick him out the door for half next year type result... equally I'd not want a long goodbye like schmicheal and end up with a ****e replacement.

That's why i'd hoped when we signed mingolet that we'd bed him in over the course of the 12 months then bid a fond farewell to reina in my own idyllic little world. I think the world cup excuse is spurious at best.

Whenever Reina made a mistake, you could see his anger at himself. Personally I like that because it shows you that the player cares and sets a high standard for himself.

Compare that to someone like Robert Green or other crap English GK's - they make a mistake and there's no emotion. It';s almost as if 'yeah, I was always going to make a mistake., move on'.

Just a small observation I made, but one that made me respect Reina. <ok>

Exactly but getting a better keeper in (hope this works out to be the case) and getting rid of Pepes wages if he was to be a sub gk and freeing up more wages for a first team outfield better is for the best isnt it?

At the end of the day if BR wanted a better keeper I support him. I know what hes said (BR) but there may be reasons behind that. Maybe he thought Pepe was going to stay and fight for his place when he said it

Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to having Migs in goal. I think he's a top class keeps. Just don't like the way Reina was handled.

Could have done what Chelsea did and loan Migs back out. To Sunderland maybe.

Lol I thought it said the opposite: be loyal at all costs. One whisper that you consider another club as an option (for whatever reason) then you're considered disloyal & we'll look to replace you.

A lesson to a very young squad at a time in football when agents constantly tell their players there's a better deal over every horizon. Let's see if we keep it a consistent approach. It's telling the squad that if I can get rid of someone of Reina's stature if I consider the boat rocked then....

Of course the garbled public messages throughout undermined the stand quite a bit lol.

Think Reina is a legend. And i am glad he is with Rafa at napoli if he cant be with us.

I see the logic with 100,000 aw eek sitting on the bench. But they should have discussed it with him first.

We are pushing player loyalty and the management have made themselves look very hypocritical.

All the best Pepe, hope we have not seen you in our colours for the last time.

Yeah I agree, its great to see that passion. He cares, you can tell that by his letter bless him! But the thing is
, if we can do better than that really is that

But, have all the passion in the world but if for whatever reason your not as good as you was/should be and the manager makes his call............

Im pleased that BR is making big decisions, best managers dont shy away from them

I agree. It's a big decision and I'm glad he did it.

We could have waited until Reina left and then bought a replacement - but then I think about Andy Carroll ...

And Reina didn't want to join Napoli - the chance of working with arguably the coach AND GK coach who got the best out of him?

Come on though DR if I'd said to you in May we need to slash wages where would you have pointed the finger? Downing? Carroll? Allen? How high up the list would Pepe have been? We did the same last year. "Saved" on Mandys wages then spent £11 fookin mill on Borini. "Saved" on Kuyt and Maxi then blew £15 fookin mill on Allen. Then we had to go spend another £20+ mill in Jan. That's not saving anything in my book.

No but the wage factor came in to it after Reina made it clear that when Barca come in he's off and we had to buy a new GK.

If that never happened he would still be in between our sticks next season.
