Probably a bit of a non Gills topic but something that has caught my observation more recently, in regards to the men in black or whatever colour it is these days; Just had on TV, Match of the Day early morning highlights, Stoke v Tottenham, when Rose appeared fouled by a Stoke player but then ran up to the opposition and shoved him in the chest, earning himself a yellow card. Why is it a high number of Premier League players insist on putting their hands on or arms around the referee as though to sway a decision with psychological human body language/behaviour afterwards. I have caught this happen a few times in League One this season, but it just seems to be a growing trend and wondered if you believe this should be stopped, with the exception of pre and post match pleasantries? Some may see it as just a reassuring action, personally i see it as a form of psychological cheating. Every time I see it happen regardless of the match or league, I just think take your hands off the ref!
I feel referees get tough time of it especially now every single decision is scrutinised and played back from every conceivable angle on TV and I myself have been known to, as Peter Lloyd would put it 'offer the benefit of my experience' to the ref after any decision that goes against us! But the arm around the ref situation in my opinion just has to go down as gamesmanship, yes they probably shouldn't be getting that close but if any referee who is in charge of a professional game should be strong enough to not be swayed by this, listen to what they have to say, but not let it affect the decision.
I think football should follow the other 'codes', union, league etc. The ref should not be touched under any circumstances. Abuse him (however lightly) and you get sent off too. That'll stop them arguing. I am amazed by how little respect referees are given in our game. Without them there is no game. No wonder the under 8's argue with the ref. They learn off their idols Oh, and I agree with your observation brb. I see more and more players 'cuddling' the ref. It's as if to say "we're friends out here ref, don't treat us badly, I'm your mate". Just trying to sway the decisions.
The best refs should be in control of fierce derbies rather than the premier league as this is where the most tough decisions are found and authority is needed.
