Aye. Who decides these things? Another one I don't understand is, I can read a message, which then means it's read. They don't mess about like that with words like dread and bread.
In which case they should have had no problem spelling a three letter word without adding a superfluous letter a.
so should it be like bead & mead & plead or bread & dead & dread & head & meadow & stead & tread or vary like lead & read looks like more -ead- words rhyme with bread than bead.
And then we have the 'English Test' of: Rough, cough, bough, dough, thorough, through, thought, lough...
