Police launched an investigation into comments on FB according to BBC

Norwich City statement on racist remarks made about manager Chris Hughton on unofficial Facebook page: "The club has been made aware of racist language about our manager posted on an unofficial fans' Facebook page in the last few days and the matter has been reported to the police as a hate crime.

"We have a zero tolerance policy on racism and all other forms of discrimination and any supporter found guilty of racist abuse faces a lifetime ban from Carrow Road in addition to any punishment handed out by the courts."

This is a slippery slope that should be avoided. I thought we were above this nonsense

    And in other news:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/24378080

Not just the manager that gets targeted.

It was the Ipswich admin on a facebook page called "Official banter between Norwich and Ipswich fans" apparently. I know I got attacked hard by the Ipswich fans on here for calling them out, but people have to understand that with what you think is "funny" or "banter" you tread very fine lines. EVERYTHING on the internet is traceable and people should be much more careful, because what is ostensibly a harmless post can be taken very much the wrong way - i.e. land you in court. I suspect, with a number of online-related suicides, that you are going to need to be more and more vigilant.

I apologise to posters on here who felt I came down hard on the other thread if they felt that it ruined some fun, but it's not for no reason.

I heard it was an Ipswich fan on a Norwich Ipswich banter page. I've been expecting it for a while given the bad feeling towards Hughton but I do think it's important We don't launch aginst all Ipswich fans. I checked out the page and theres a fair bit of "Ipswich are a racist club" and "All Ipswich fans are racist" style comments which is obviously pretty absurd.

We've had racism issue with our own "fans" the "Fan" that said "we have too many black players" when we bought James Vaughan springs to mind...

The bottom line is, theres twats everywhere and some of them follow football

Whats important is the club come down hard on it to send a message, if we have a bad result and a glut of racist comments came from our own fans I'd be pretty devastated tbf.

Great Post Beefy and have some REP Fella <ok>

Banter is one thing but racist abuse should be stamped out no matter where it comes from.

I can't abide racism at all and feel there is no excuse for labelling someone as different or even less important based on something as ultimately unimportant as skin colour. Norfolk and Suffolk (although I can't talk about suffolk from much first hand experience) are very white places due to a lack of immigration to the areas especially in the 50s, this is slowly changing but I do feel attitudes in the area can be quite racist more down to misinformation than actual antipathy. Quite frequently I hear references to "Coloured People" and other old fashioned terms a long with noticeably changing attitudes around people from other ethnic backgrounds.
these attitudes are changing in the region and are better in Norwich and the surrounding area than they are in say north norfolk However I feel this is a wider issue than inside the football club. Norwich city's attitude is very good and i hope that they can have a greater effect on the community.
As I have said i don't feel there is a lot of actual acrimonious feeling generally just a lack of decent education and experience. Of course there will however be a larger element of people who feel "they don't represent us" or "don't what that lot here".
I hope this situation is born of the ill feeling that some have toward Hughton flaring up and not born of actual racist feelings, but these are the people i don't want to be associated with as a norwich fan or a football fan.

I am not wishing to spark more arguements but Ipswich has a vibrant multi racial community. I agree that Suffolk as a whole is predominately white because it is a rural county but Ipswich is very different.

    No argument here.

As I said Norwich has become far more multi cultural, I haven't been to ipswich in years but could imagine that this is entirely true. Due to ipswich's greater proximity to London especially. I was talking more about the counties than the urban area

Bath you raise some valid points there, it can affect attitudes not growing up in mainly white environment

Norwich has changed a fair bit, when my partner first moved here 20 years ago she was one of very few coloured people in the city. We were talking about it at party the other day about racial encounters (the host was Peruvian who'd just had one), one was an Indian chap asking which Banana boat she came in on when she was cheering for England in the pub, I think she's had one more direct verbal in her time here. I think that's quite low, but it might be more to do with the people and society she mixed with.

Whilst she's not suffered a lot of direct racism she says when on a bus the seat next to her is quite often the last taken. Where she works the people she speaks to on the phone look surprised when they see her.

Does the colour of somebody's skin really make that much difference?

I'm surprised at CH getting any kind of abuse because he's one of the nicest/friendliest guys you could wish to meet in the game.

I suppose the Indian chap saw himself as white did he?

I personally think people in Norwich are put off more by big inner city cultures.

I've been to Norwich games home and away for over 30 years. I'm proud to say I've never had any racist remarks towards me on match days in the pubs, streets or in the ground. Amazingly, the only time I've faced this was on Facebook by a Norwich City employee. He was lucky I didn't pursue his termination of employment.

i've never encountered any racist chanting at any football match i've ever been to (and i've been to a few!) involving norwich or anyone else for that matter. i recall us being accused of racist chanting at goodison park a few years ago - i still feel sick to the stomach about the way everton treated our football club and in particular our fans that day. i'm not sure they ever apologised either - a ghastly slur against our fans and it was completely 100% fabricated nonsense.

There are still very few non whites that go, I can only think of two I've seen regularly walking to or in the ground.

I think racism at the ground is very much seen as taboo by all, I remember the monkey chants and trigger trigger trigger up till I was about 16. I think it was killed off pretty quickly when the Premiership started (at Carrow Rd anyway) as I recall.

Never heard any racist chanting at the Carrow road. Heard some borderline chat between people though.
