After last years groans about loanee players coming in under pj (of which i freely admit i was one) i`ve noticed a few groans about the three lads coming in on loan, and i find i have changed my mind. As brilliantly that MM has done up to now, we can be in no doubt that we are still firmly in the relegation battle. If the unthinkable happened and we do go down, the impact on the whole infrastructure of the club would be colossal, and so i think that any permanent signings at this stage would be very unwise. So i think that MM &co have rightly been very prudent and if everything ends up hunky dory then we can proceed with permanent signings and prepare for the big push next year. 3 excellent signings, coupled with good common sense= reasons to be optomistic. Well done all.
I don't think we got in these loans because the management are worried about us getting relegated, I think we got these loans in purely for the fact that loans are FAST (shown by the fact we didn't hear about these deals until they were practically done) and we needed players in the squad ASAP. Loans with a view to a permanent signing are great, we get a "try before you buy" player and during the sometimes months of negotiation they are playing with the team and starting to love the club. Loans just for the sake of loaning can be used to good effect, but IMO rarely are. It is much better to play your own players, but I believe the loans we have are to bolster the squad while we either 1) get a deal sorted for the player or 2) scout for a long-term solution. With the thread-bare squad we currently have I will only get worried if we start getting more loan players to replace the current loan players...
It's not often we get posts on here with hands held high and posters admitting to a change of heart and I find this refreshing, Yorkiegit. Most people prefer to flog the proverbial expired nag. I think the difference we're experience with SuperMick is that, on 5th January, we have 3 players in, with a view to actually keeping at least one of them. And like you say, no obligations to keep them if it all goes breasts skyward. I think there'll be more transfer action this January too. I for one though think relegation is a distant fear now. It's worth more than pride to SuperMick (£1m more, actually) so I consider this as forward planning. Well done SuperMick!
Have to agree with Wright on this one. January is a very difficult transfer window, clubs make desperate often overpriced purchases. Particularly in the case of McGoldrick and Kisnorbo, MM moved quick and got 2 players in positions we need really in the short term. I'm not so sure about McLean, not entirely sure I rate him and whether he's the kind of striker we need. I would imagine that these will actually be the last loan players we get unless we cannot extend Orr and Hendersons loans. So I geuss from now on unless we sign a player on a free and a short term contract until the end of the season I would imagine we won't complete much business untill closer to the end of the transfer window!! Have to say it's refreshing that we've got 3 players in as quickly as we have, he came to the club identified we were short at LB and didn't have a RB, so got players in those positions and then realised we needed a target man striker so got in Barnett. He's done the same thing this transfer window. However I haven't been overly impressed with who he's recruited, none are stand out pieces of business to me, I think Barnett may have turned out to be a good player for us and maybe McGoldrick but the others for me are pretty average, although we certainly could do worse. The thing with MM is I think he can probably get an average set of players organised and getting decent results more than most managers, it is what he's done all of his managerial career. Credit has to go to MM for this but perhaps it's also a change of policy at the top since the rather fruitless summer and they suddenly realised we're in the sh*t we better get some players in, hence the sudden bout of loan players at the end of PJ's reign and seemingly how quickly MM gets in players. One thing I do find most refreshing though is although I liked that PJ was refreshingly honest and he did talk alot of sense, sometimes he needed to learn to keep his mouth shut, as it really didn't help himself, because we knew all of our transfer details hence we knew when they went wrong (which was alot of the time). MM has been alot quieter on this front, alot of these transfers have come out of the blue and we've only heard about them once they've been completed. For all we know we could've missed out on loads of players albeit in only a few days but because we haven't heard about it we are blissfully unaware and therefore not dissapointed that we've missed out on yet another player, or perhaps MM is being more realistic with the calibre of player we are going after, who knows??!!
I don't think we can really expect Mick to get top quality players in every position. As long as we have a few key players in the squad and the rest work their socks off we should be able to get out of this division. Only once we start challenging for promotion or get into the PL will we really be able to start attracting the top quality players.
I'm not really talking about top quality players, I'm talking about players with a bit of quality to them maybe not the well known quality players, I was always impressed with who PJ got in in terms of quality most of the time, it was the whole building a balanced squad and getting players in, prioritising positions etc that he got wrong. We can get players who have more quality/are more exciting than these. So far MM has seemed to be good at getting players in and generally identifying what positions need sorting out but for me alot of them have been distinctly average but at the same time he hasn't been in the job very long and we need strengthening quickly in certain areas, so signing 3 quality players would be difficult. Like I said though it doesn't worry me that much because I think MM would be able to get results with distinctly average players in this league, because he gets them organised and does the simple things, which is what he has been doing all his career!!!
How the **** can you say that the signings that MM has brought in have all been average! I know for you the sun still shines out of PJ's backside but how you can judge these players without even seeing them play is beyond me! Kisnorbo today was excellent, McGoldrick has only had 20 minutes along with McClean. I don't expect you to give much praise to MM but at least be fair to the man. Afterall he is the one that has dragged us out of the miserable mess that Jewell left behind!
Sorry I think that all of Micks signings are of immense quality, as they were all getting in their respective Championship teams, I mean really what was I thinking, none of them are average!! Again glad to see you read my whole post because I didn't praise Mick at all!! And I've never said on many occassions that Mick has done a great job so far!!! (For your benefit JWM, if you read this, that was sarcasm)
Yes that is exactly what I said!! (sarcasm again for you there) Do you know how to have a constructive debate??? I've judged the players who he's brought in on their merits and on our circumstance, I would've been saying exactly the same thing had PJ signed them. I'm pretty confident that if PJ would have signed the exact same players who Mick has signed you would've said something completely different, am I right???
ptc I find it really hard to have a constructive debate with you because you come across as being such a bloody know all MM has made some good solid signings and we should all be thankfull that he is dragging this great club out of the bloody mire.
I've rarely seen you try to have a constructive debate with anyone on here!! If you tried to engage with what I've said rather than what you've think I've said I'd be happy to engage in debate with you!! All I know from you is that you think PJ=crap, PJ signings=crap, MM=is the messiah, MM signings=immense!! You never really give an opinion on tactics, on subs, on who you think are good players and why you think that, I really am interesed in what you actually think on things not just obscure statements or cliches!! Just because you think MM is the right man (I'm with you there) doesn't mean you can not be critical of him, as was with PJ just because you thought he was useless doesn't mean you can't give him some credit!!! What do you actually think of the players MM has signed in the past few days?? I seemed to remember you shouting me down when I said I wasn't overly enthralled about the LB he signed Youga and you thought he could be a great signing for us and it would mean we would convert Creswell to LW.
As interesting as the January transfer window is I think the big test for MM is who stays and who goes in the Summer. We cant continue to stand by players who contribute so very little in matches, I know its part of MMs job to get the best out of players but sometimes you have to admit that you cant develop whats not there. JET is one that comes to mind, hes had his chances but his contribution in matches is pathetic, Lee Martin who nearly does this and nearly does that but actually achieves very little is another maybe thats why the Club is stalling on a contract offer. An influx of fresh players is required and Im sure MM has the experience and contacts to bring in the right ones.
While Im sure this will happen in the summer as a new manager always wants to bring in there own players, this is what has been wrong with our club over the last few years. Every summer we seem to have an overhaul of players which means it then takes them time to gel. I hope that MM is building a squad for the next few seasons, not the next six months like the other two clowns have done. I think MM is a good experienced manager and will be doing this, but we still have contacts coming to an end which has been our problem since clegg joined us....
Youre right CT, " Clegg and the contract fiasco " seems to be a saga thats set to run on for a long time. I do understand about fresh squads needing time to gel but the clapped out has beens brought in previously need to be cleared out asap and replaced with enthusiastic, energetic players with pace to put the buzz back into the club on and off the pitch.
I have to say I hope we don't have a major overhaul in the summer, yes we need a few players but lets try to work with what we've got aswell!! I understand MM will want to bring in his own team but ever since Keane has been at the club we've rebuilt the squad every summer whether we've had to or not!! We've got some good players here but it needs balancing and strengthening. I would really like to see MM really give Martin and JET a chance and try to work on them. In Martins case, yes he flatters to decieve but there are few players like him who don't, even the best wingers (if we are calling him that) in the PL have little end product. I'd prefer to see him as a RW though, it pains me to see him on the LW, especially when Edwards seems so ineffectial as a winger!! I'm of the opinion that we should give Martin a new contract (not at any cost) because he other than Creswell has been one of the main stays in our team this season, and has looked more dangerous than anyone in our team, so if we were to let him go that would be another player we would need to replace, something we failed to do with players like Wright, McAuley, Norris, Leadbitter and Delaney (not a big loss in terms of Norris and Delaney), even though we thought it would be easy to do so. But to get a replacement of sufficient quality would mean spending more money which could be used elsewhere. In terms of JET, he is very frustrating he's one of those players a bit like Counago some people love him some people hate him. I'd like to see him given a run of games in the centre tbh, as a player like him needs a few games I think to settle his play down, as I think because he gets so little game time he probably tries to do the over the top thing all too often, I think we need to have a bit of patience with the guy. Perhaps he's not the kind of player we want in a relegation fight maybe MM will put him in more once we are hopefully safe!! Remember many people on here said he would be our player of the season this year and there was rumour that Fulham were interested. My concern is players like JET, Taylor and Martin I'm not sure fit into a rigid 442 formation that MM likes to play, and they're not typical MM players, so I do worry about them as IMO they are potentially very very good players at this level but you have to let MM make the decision and put his mark on the team. But so far I've been impressed as he hasn't reivented the wheel or suggested that he wants to although he hasn't had much choice, I think MM is the kind of guy to evolve a squad and work with what he's got rather than overhaul it but then that's what Keane said when he first took over and look what happened!!!
Jesus, you don't half write some long posts ptc, most of them a regurgitation of yesterdays. I'm sure everyone is fully aware by now that you would like to see Martin on the right and you find Edwards not to be very good as a winger but more a wingba........zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I'm with FM on this, although Martin has lots of energy his end product is sadly lacking for an attacker and could be replaced with a lower league player I'm sure. I'm kind of in the middle with regards to JET. He has some really good close control for a big lad and I would like it to work out for him but I think he either needs a good run of games to find some form or he needs to do more with the game time he does get. Ideally I would send him out on loan to a league one club so that he can get a reality check on how lucky he is to be employed by a championship club considering his overall contribution to our team.
