I know somebody who goes on about how terrible Hull is but when he goes to Hull he goes by coach straight to the ground and straight back to London after the match. There's idiots everywhere. It doesn't make them representative.
I don't see what you're getting at. If he thinks Hull is so terrible, wouldn't getting straight in and out be the logical thing to do? EDIT: Ah, I think I see now. I thought you were talking about a City fan, but now I reckon you're not.
True. But a brisk walk or bus from Muswell Hill to Haygate!!! There were some nice pubs there, like The Red Lion and Sun and The Gatehouse. The Spaniards, projecting out at an angle on Hampstead Lane, was pleasant in the garden on a summer's evening or a classical evening in the grounds of Kenwood House.
When I was single I always wanted to live near the tube. Having good transport links always helps the house price. I bought a flat in Southfields and within months the value had reduced by a third because of the 1990 property crash. Ten years later the price had more than doubled. Colliers Wood is now having a lot of new developments built which should increase the price. If you buy in London buying where Crossrail or Crossrail 2 is adding a station will increase the price. I go to a meeting outside London at Esher every month and it's a great place. There's plenty of nice places inside London as long as you avoid the obvious bad areas but you can only live where you can afford and what you like within the price or rent. Every London area has some good properties now.
In the early eighties I worked in Kingstone upon Thames and stayed in Twickenham, I would love to move back but doubt we could even afford a bed sit !!

Oooh, what a thread! First, if you are in Colliers Wood the place to watch City on TV is the Royal Standard - odd name for an Irish bar but great Guinness and proper working man's place. You'll find me and my lad there making the noise. Me, I live in E1 (Aldgate, Tower of London, that sort of thing) but I'm buying a flat in Hull to retire to and watch City for the rest of my days. London is a great place to live whatever anyone says, it's got everything. But Hull's where I want to be - the big sky, the clear sharp air and that other resonance.
just over 15 years ago I invested the redundancy money I received from one job into buying 6 houses in Hull with the intention of renting them out. I have had a steady income of around £3400 a month from them ever since (only had about 16 weeks in total empty in that time), the houses are also now worth around double what I paid for them. Investing wisely there are still bargains in Hull, I'm looking to increase my portfolio when I retire in 5 years with a much better rate of return than putting my lump sum in the bank
You can buy some properties really cheap and rent them out to students to make a big return. With better properties (but not luxury) you don't make as much. I have a property worth about £150k in Sutton and it would only bring in about £6k per year. I prefer to let a family friend live in it for free.
