the last couple of results have been poor. of our 8 games remaining we have 4 against teams in the bottom 6, 2 against teams in the lower mid table and just 2 against teams in the playoff race. on paper its the easiest run in but we are not in good form. a positive result on Tuesday would be very helpful.

this is fun. I am still convinced we will be going to West Ham on the 28th with something to play for.

I was assuming that both Birmingham and Boro' both win their 39th game as well. I.e. All having played the same number of games. Naturally if everyone ends up losing all there games and only draw when they play each other then we could end up top but I am not that optimistic.

You serious? Don't be surprised if we win all our next 7 games? After we've won 1 in the last 9? I would be beyond surprised, I'd be in a state of shock. I reckon we could win 4 at a push.

We could win the lot of them, that's what so frustrating. We'll more than likely dominate these games, win the odd one or two to give us a false glimmer of hope and throw the rest away as draws.

We've got a winnable run of games but going by our form I can't fathom how you can say we'll win all 7. Been Ninth in the league is hardly reason to be rushing to book hotel rooms near Wembley either. Though I agree on wanting Southampton and Reading to take the automatic places, they've shown the most consistency out of the top sides and in Southampton's case all season. I think it'll be tough for West Ham to try and get back in there.

What I like about the comments on this Forum is the way abject optimism is expressed by all of you .
    Great!!!.
but I can't express optimism any more. I have been disappointed too often in the past and this season is
    no exception.

Which do you prefer Charles - 'abject optimism' or boundless pessimism?

2-0 down at Pompey and our performance sounds dire. I think your hopes of seven wins have already evaporated Tickler.
BTW Considering you still have the most optimism could you update the table if it doesn't improve because it aint fun doing it when we lose?

Table after tonight's games, not out of it but 3 defeats in a row is the last thing you want at this stage of the season.

    1 Southampton 39 78
    2 Reading 39 73
    3 West Ham 39 72
    4 Brighton 39 62
    5 Middlesbrough 39 62
    6 Birmingham 38 60
    7 Blackpool 39 60
    8 Cardiff 39 60
    9 Hull 39 58
    10 Leeds United 39 57
    11 Leicester 39 56
    12 Derby 39 55

Boundless pessimism, then you can never be disappointed.

Boundless pessimism doesn't create a conflict, but can you explain abject optimism?

Other than us playing against a team with PB managing them and you being disappointed that you thought we'd beat them I can't think of an example to illustrate it. ;)

Charles. Since watching Hull City's first match in 1946 you must be a battle-hardened supporter by now with disappointment well and truly tamed. My husband who went to the Tigers second match that year introduced himself to another forum as follows:

"After following Hull City for almost 65 years I would describe their week to week form as a riddle wrapped up in a conundrum and forecasting results is an enigma.
A supporter must be able to mix a healthy dose of realism with the right amount of pessimism and a sprinkling of optimism to maintain their equilibrium and more importantly their sanity. Always remember that when we are certain to win we will lose and vica versa but never forget the draw."

Incidentally I hope you get a win this Saturday. Are the club sending a limousine to pick you up and seating you next to the Allams?
