Sad old men. I remember getting ambushed by some of them back in the late 70s, not a pleasant experience...

I used to run the Coat and Badge in Putney, an Fulham 'home' pub. I remember, on New Years Day 2008 (I think), Fulham were hosting Chelsea, and the pub had 50 Headhunters in...

Thank God the regular home fans had got wind of this, and stayed away. We had a meat wagon parked outside for the duration of the game, and I got permission from the bosses to close for an hour after the game.

I told the coppers in the van that's what I was doing, and they said they'd 'sort out' the problem... Low and behold, with 15 minutes left in the match, about 40 officers walked into the pub garden, and once I'd called time, escorted the Chelsea 'fans' to Putney High Street train station, and out of the borough.

The two families that were having New Years Day dinners barely even knew what was going on, and as soon as the thugs had gone, I started serving them again, after explaining.

The really daft thing was that these die hard Chelsea fans spent about 20 minutes watching the game, and the other 70 on their phones, arranging meet-ups for afters, with fans of Fulham and other clubs.

The lead officer on the scene told me I'd had 50 of the worst hooligans in the country in the Coat that day. Truly, truly frightening.

I know it's not always a popular opinion, but I was hugely thankful to the Met on that day...

I saw this in The Times, decided not to draw attention to it. Evolution has clearly bypassed some people.

French CRS should have been more than a match for those thugs. Hope they got well sorted out.
