fair play. Can't remember the last time i wanted a manager to succeed more than him, especially after last year, but it hasn't worked out. He wasn't wanted by everyone, but i always liked Poyet, time to move on though
Gus Poyet statement after Sunderland sacking “Certainly I am very disappointed to have left Sunderland but I am extremely honoured to have served this special club as their manager. “When I arrived in October 2013, Sunderland had played 7 matches and lost 6, gaining only 1 point and they were bottom of the Barclays Premier League. “31 matches later, at the end of the season, we had won 10 and drawn 8, taking us to the complete safety of 14th position. “I will always remember fondly that miracle unbeaten run, a vein of form for which I was honoured to be shortlisted for the Barclays Premier League Manager of the Year Award. “I leave Sunderland feeling proud of all of our achievements during my tenure, not least reaching the club’s first cup final in 22 years when we took more than 30,000 fans to the Capital One Cup Final at Wembley. Of the three Tyne-Wear derby matches since I joined the club as manager, I am very proud that we were able to win all three, two of which were away from home. “I will never forget winning at Old Trafford last May, Sunderland’s first league victory there since 1968, which came shortly after beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. “This season, Sunderland remains the only team not to have conceded to Chelsea and the club has remained outside of the bottom three throughout. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chairman Ellis Short for giving me my first opportunity to manage in the Barclays Premier League, without a doubt the greatest league in the world. “I also thank my staff for their valuable assistance, the players for all their efforts and, in particular, the fans who demonstrate such unbelievable passion for the club. “I sincerely wish everyone connected with Sunderland the very best for the remainder of the season
At least he's shoem a bit of class by not getting into the blame game, so kudos for that! And a nice summary of the highlights. Some good ones there. Didn't mention the 8-0 at Southampton though.....
Nowt like a balanced subjective statement. Would have had more respect for him if he acknowledged his own failings there whilst listing his achievements, but hey ho. Thank you for the memories and good luck Gus.
Can't argue with that like.... I was desperate for Gus to succeed but it wasn't to be. His tenure will be remembered more than most tho
Canny advert for an out of work manager looking for his next contract As BM states, shows class in not getting into the blame game and will always be held in high regard by me for getting us to Wembley.
Putting himself in the shop window there. Clever boy. Mention of the fans is conspicuous by its absence. Very gracious at first glimpse. Polishing crap at a second look. Bloke's a ****ing idiot who was way out of his depth.
And the old trafford semi and west brom at home when the escape was complete, all 3 will live forever in the memory
Did you stare directly at the eclipse with the naked eye? “I also thank my staff for their valuable assistance, the players for all their efforts and, in particular, the fans who demonstrate such unbelievable passion for the club.
I'm referring to his falling out with us mate. Slagging us off and then us giving him ****. He doesn't mention anywhere that he should have kept his mouth shut with regards to the board, the fans, the DoF or his squad. That's what got him the sack. He was living on borrowed time when he pissed the cans and Congerton off. The results were just a nail in the coffin. The blokes got smaller balls than my infant nephew and has never held his hands up and admitted his huge errors.
What manager ever admits his own mistakes to the press ? You are expecting miracle if you think Poyet would do so
Agreed - Can't expect him to come out and say "yeah sorry I was rubbish towards the end". At least he's saying he's appreciative of the fans' passion. A better bloke than Bruce.
He had some good ideas. I particularly liked him taking charge of the Academy himself so that the kids learned 'the Sunderland way' from scratch. It's what Wenger's being doing at Arsenal for years. When a kid you've never heard of comes into their side, after 20 minutes you'd think he'd been there for 2 years. They all fit like a glove at any level. Whatever our new manager decides is 'the Sunderland way', I hope we'll stick with that principle. But I agree with Disco in a way. He was too stubborn and too single-minded for his own good. Take the Clough/Ferguson 'gaffer' type and add a bit of South American machismo, and I can imagine he was a pain in the neck to other staff members at times. They were probably just waiting for a reason to be rid - and recent results were it. I think he'll do well somewhere, and wish him luck.
He hasn`t said anything unexpected imo. Pretty standard fare really. At least there`s no mention of how unfair it all is, needed more time or his Uruguayan roots.
Its the most eloquent press statement he has given for a long while, either the pressure is off and he is more relaxed or someone else wrote it for him, either way he has shown more class than the BFGB, it would be hard not to I know , but fair does to Gus and I wish him the very best in the future, I dont think he will be out of football for too long, as he is a football man and did OK for us until he seemed to panic after Hull won again at the SOL.
Great PR team written that for him mind, but fair play to him for remaining positive towards the club. Still, had to go and glad he has.
