Sad news at Portsmouth. A couple of seasons ago they were winning the FA Cup and now the word is that they are unlikely to finish the end of the season which hopefully for their fans wont be true. The only positive is if they were to go down it improves our chances of survival but hopefully if we do stay up it will be because we earnt it by winning games.

I guess Portsmouth is an example of needing owners who know how to manage a club as when you here they had players on over £70k a week and their stadium ony held 20k you have to ask why did Harry, Potential future England manager buy these players when they couldnt balance the book.

Hopefully their fans wont be punished by losing their beloved club they support as would hate it if it happened to us.

Harry Redknapp was rubbing his hands and laughing at the stupidity. Gaydamak basically gave him an open check book and he didn't think twice about spending vast, ridiculous sums of money that the club could not afford to spend. I worked out that on the known amount on money spent and recieved during Redknapp's two reigns as Pompey boss the club spent approximately £106,500,000 and recouped £107,455,000, a minor profit perhaps but not when added to wages, bonuses and extra payments to former clubs.

it's just another sad reminder of the current state of football due to the total mis-management of clubs by people who believe that the only way to achieve success is to buy it. WRONG WRONG WRONG.

Just a little note here on how Doncaster's season was possibly saved by a group of guys who turned up at the 11th hour with 50K in a briefcase. Some players earn that amount in a couple of days and don't give a damn about anyone else's plight, the selfish gits.

That's the sad reality of our game and Pompey and Rangers are the template of where the game is headed.

No, he's not on £50k pw - but he is still on his premiership contract and ergo premiership wage, which we understand to be £36k pw.

What beggars belief is that PFCs accounts are sent to the Football League, monthly I believe, and they have to authorise every move in and out - and yet we are in a worse mess than before.

The pompey fans have been calling for all the higher earners to be sold off and play the youngsters - but the management decision was "quality over quantity". We pay the price for something we can't even influence.

Am hoping we are still in existence for your visit to the Park in 2 weeks time <ok>

Sky are claiming that ben haim is on £36k per week so slightly more than what we are paying James at our club.

I did hear that they were paying players like Sol Campbell £100k a week when he was at the club.

It does go to show how important it is for our club to get their new stadium as the bigger stadium will bring in more revenue espeically if they sort out the sponsorship for the stadium correctly. I dont think we will be getting 30k sell out crowds every week but think the average attendence will go up slightly but I guess this will depend on ticket prices. Just hope we wont be like Coventry who got a brand new stadium, having been there to see City win, I would say that it appeared that we had more away supporters than they had home supporters.

With the cost we have had to pay over the last fews year for the stadium process makes you wonder how long it will take to pay that back as I am sure we wont be like Arsenal who are reported to make £3m profit after every home game.

Correct. So Southampton will lose 1 point but West Ham will lose 6 - will result in changes at the top of the board.

Yep you're spot on CJS all points will be deducted from anyone who has taken points off them. That would mean one less point for City

donny played pompey once and lost so zero points deducted.
coventry played pompey once and lost so zero points deducted.
forest played pompey once and lost so zero points deducted.
millwall played pompey once and won so they get 3 points deducted.

so if pompey dont finish the season then that benefits donny, coventry and forest. milllwall gets dragged back into it again. i presume only 2 would get relegated as well as pompey be gone!

I find this so, so depressing. Not the fact that some clubs will gain if Pompey cannot finish the year - just the fact that the modern game and it's intense greed by players and agents and our apprent stupidity to continue to pay inflated ticket prices and inflated prices for goods endorsed by the greedy players has resulted in a famous institution such as Portsmouth getting close to closure. How on earth can the leagues allow clubs to get in this position? The Premier League cares only about itself and its sponsors. The fans and the communities that support the clubs are simply irrelevent.

It's extremely sad the way that football has gone in the last 20 years or so. The European Cup, once the glittering prize for any club, is now just a useless money making exercise. Champions League - bollox. If only the Champions were let in and it was knock out, fare enough but that's not the way it is and it's mini league, after mini league. I could not give a toss about it.

I truly hope that the plight of Pompey, Port Vale, Rangers FC actually brings a reality check to the game. Unfortunately, I doubt it.

Thing about Harry is, as has been common knowledge for a while and by his own admission, the guy is academically challenged to say the least.
Working at a club, Redknapp needs an MD who can deal with the financial and business aspects of that club, because Harry cannot even deal with the financial and business aspects of being Harry.
However, what he can do, and does rather well, is design and motivate teams of footballers to play above their capabilities. His lack of trophies are merely a reflection on the level at which his clubs exist, although the FA Cup at Pompey, and the last two years at Spurs have shown him in a more accurate light.
It follows therefore that Harry would be perfect for England, without the constraints and worries of business management. Reminds me in fact of another Spurs manager, a certain Venables (England's 3rd most successful tournament manager), who also had his business suited quagmire to contend with.
    Redknapp, you're hired !!

does anyone know what happened to the leagues that the clubs that are no more? how did the leagues manage when chester went for example?

i mean if pompey goes then i presume just 2 get relegated from the campionship.
3 go up from league 1 to replace those 3 clubs (2 relegated and pompey gone)
but 2 only go down leaving 23 clubs in league 1.

how will league 1 gain an extra club?

will it mean only 5 get promoted from league 2 not the usual 4, meaning league 1 gets 24 clubs.

if so then that means 23 clubs will be in league 2 freeing another space for another club to get promoted from the blue square and so on.

pompey leaving will effect all leagues.

Fact is, if City dont start winning some matches soon it will not help us if the top ten teams ceased to exist.
If we go down this season then the entire first team squad (including Maynard) should hang their heads in shame, because it will have been their own fault.

The most important aspect of this thread is the fact that British football could well lose some very important elements this season, which will weaken all the others (including our national sides).

It's sad, but their owners have spent money they have not got, including this summer - it's the fans that suffer.
If they do go completely belly up I believe one less team would be relegated in each league

one laughable point is that West Ham would drop out of the automatic places if the pointed were taken off like Sky have stated so nicky might still be playing in the championship.

things like this would leave to appeal court cases and everything else like when Sheff Utd got relegated and west ham were invled with tevez.

The FA either way needs to come out asap and state what would happen if they cant make it to the end of the season so everyone knows where we stand
