I don't think that many managers do, SNIAW. They say one thing to the public and another entirely to the players. He can't be happy with your defending, but he can't publicly slaughter your defenders, either. What I don't understand is why it took so long to bring in Santos and Mertesacker. Arteta and Benayoun were replacements for people that you didn't expect to leave, but Clichy left early and you knew that someone had to come in at centre-half. Poor timing, for me. A good pre-season, where they could settle into the rhythm of the side and adjust to your style of play, would've done a lot for them. Just getting used to playing together would've helped no end, too. Having to do all that while trying to get results isn't helping and it could've been avoided.
