Two questions that Saints fans may find difficult to answer. I have put a reciprocal thread on the Pompey board. Which past Portsmouth player do you most respect and why? Which current Portsmouth player do you most respect and why?
Past - Primus for me. Great bloke first & footballer second. Present- Kanu. Skillfull in his day and stuck through the darkest times. Pompey are still the 3rd best team on the south Coast Though!!
Guy Whittingam for me - like the idea of someone coming out of the army and making a succesful career out of football. Herman Hreidasson - good solid pro
Linvoy Primus - charity work, committed player Jamie Ashdown - has always been no. 2 and now has the chance to be a good first teamer
Kevin Dillon was a good player, but a miserable sod. Mickey Quinn knew where the net was, but knew where cowplain social club was better, Vince Hilaire could dance, Alan Knight was very loyal, but I think I'll have to plump for Gentleman Jim as he was from my home town. Current - none really stand out.
Have always been a Sheringham fan, so I guess I'd say him from your past. As for your present, Lawrence is probably the only player in your squad that I'd very happily welcome into our dressing room, so I'd say him from your present. I think he's a top player at this level.
Past: Linvoy Primus easily, my uncle is good friends with him and he is honestly the nicest bloke around Does a lot for his community and the church near him, and a few years back he also walked The Great Wall of China for charity! Current: Well that would be a harder one, I'd probably go for Liam Lawrence.
Not sure about the past but in the current crop - I would have loved Huseklepp to sign for us, good player.
Past:....I obviously never saw him play, but all the Pompey fans I have worked with have told me how much of a PFC legend 'Gentleman' Jim Dickinson was. Anyone who can play the best part of 1,000 games without getting booked, demands respect. Current: Erik the Viking (and not just because of that own goal!)
Quite an exceptional player and he was a gentleman in every thing he did......It would be very unusual for him to be blown for a foul if memory serves me correct he had the skill to defend with out the need to foul. He did not query a referee's decision......although he was well known for his stare. If he knocked you over he would pick you up. Others would know him better and I am quoting from boyhood memory it is true. If a player started to get a bit lary which was rare it is true.....he would shrug and walk away. Would walk over and shake an opponent's hand despite the fact that the same guy had being trying to perhaps decapitate him all game.......A gentle on the pitch and off it too.........
I have to say that I couldn't name a single Pompey player off the top of my head, though I do recognise the names quoted. Met Guy Whittingham so I'll go for him..nice bloke.
Jimmy Dickinson's home town of Alton is my birthplace so has to be him and it seems his 'Gentleman' nickname was well earned so for me its him incidently there is now a Gentleman Jim pub in Alton tribute to the man himself.Also liked Guy Whittingham bit of a name drop i know but i did actually play against him before he was discovered he was based in the army at Bordon and played for the then army champs SEME and the local team i played for played the in a civvy v army good nieghbours friendly we got acreditable 1 1 draw on an icy pitch that you would never be allowed to play on now

Chaplow SH, as I said in my early post, I was Alton born and bred. Did you stay there long? You must be a similar age if you were Alton general born as it didn't last long after. I left when I was 23
Me and my mates would stand outside his gate (long after he played - i seem to recall him being manager there; is this true) and he'd always say hello. As a point of no interest at all, I used to deliver milk to his widow as my weekend job.
Past: Bobby Stokes easy peasy Present: That kanu bloke seems like a nice chap. Could watch his goal vs. Chelsea all day long
