I don’t know what influence Al Gore still has in the world but he didn’t hold back with his comments on Sunak and his climate policies. Al Gore has accused Rishi Sunak of “backsliding” by supporting oil and gas exploration in the North Sea. The former US vice president slammed the PM’s climate policies, saying: “I think they’re terrible and very disappointing.” He added: “When the UK’s policies are supporting the flourishing of humanity and solving the climate crisis, it can have a very big impact for the good. “But when backsliding, it tends to sometimes give permission to other nations to backslide more than they might otherwise do.” Mr Gore, 75, added: “It does hurt the efforts here at Cop28 to have a UK PM adopting policies that can seem to only benefit the fossil fuel industry.”

It's really chilling that people actually buy this. Surely they can't actually genuinely believe it? The ones they haven't released, including the woman seen bleeding from her bottom, with slit achileses (what's the plural of achiles?!) in a video from a Hamas Gopro are supposedly a concern for what they might say about their treatment. All very humane. Bring them all home.
The anti-migration measures worry me as it may affect my partner even thought we are strictly adhering to the legal route. Part of me can see the issue as to why such measures would be popular with some voters. However, I think that immigration is not something that will ever be controlled by the policies of any of the countries perceived to be the destination of illegal immigrants. The message being peddled by the Right is that by implimenting this, the "problem" cannot be addressed. I think this is total stupidity as it takes no account of the reality. I do not feel it is possible to blame any migrant from trying to better themselves and, indeed, the whole idea of self-improvement is very much at the base of much Right-wing thought. Quite clearly this is an issue which does not have a solution for the" host" countries. As long as the Western / developed world is more economically viable and politically stable it will remain the destination of choice. Coupled with global warming and instability caused by meddling by countries as diverse as the US, China. those from the Middle East and Europe, whole parts of the globe are set to become unfavourable to live in and the need to migrate will only grow. It is not a scenario which will reduce and I feel that the future impact of global warming will make ensure that it will be imperative for people from warmer climes to move to the temporate parts of the hemisphere. We should not be looking to stop immigration (which does benefit the economy) but also looking at how these challenges can be managed for the benefit of humanity. The likes of Farage can be ignored since these kinds of politicians have no understanding of the scale of the problem. The Uk (and the wider parts of Europe for that matter ) cannot stop immigration and the scale of movement will ultimately reach a scale where the whole idea of borders will be impractical. We are entering a moment in history which has parallels with late antiquity and I feel the answer is not to stop immigration but to understand how we provide for those people who are displaced. I like the idea of of citizenship being earned and not being a right. It would be much better to accept people who genuinely wish to live in the UK and can add benefit as opposed to those such as Farage who have no place in a modern and liberal society.
Interesting video (if a bit long winded) about the Tories trying to push through, without scrutiny, the right to inspect the bank accounts of anyone claiming a benefit INCLUDING the state pension. So, ignoring the fact that there are already laws in place to allow the scrutiny of a benefit claimant’s bank account, to check for a fraudulent claim, the Tories now want the right to look at the accounts of pensioners who aren’t claiming benefits, but receiving a state pension. It already pisses me off that the state pension is referred to as a benefit, so the Tories need to **** off, right now.
I`d be majorly surprised if the Supreme Court back-tracked on their decision to deem the Rwanda deal illegal, despite anything reached following the junket that no-so-Cleverly has just been on. I wonder how much more money they have thrown at the deal ?
I think the state pension is classified as a non means tested benefit...and there's nothing written in law that stops it becoming a means tested benefit in the future or being altered substantially in other ways. That being said, what's the incentive for people to keep paying for previous pensioners if it isn't going to happen when it's your turn to retire?
Two quick points. On Rwanda, how many of the public are aware that the UK will receive “a portion of Rwanda’s vulnerable refugees” as part of this deal. Will the number be equal to or greater than those the government are trying to send to Rwanda, in which case what’s the point, other than politics? Second point. Between 2020 & 2022, the NHS in England spent £3.2 billion on agency nurses, according to figures from 182 trusts. This is equal to paying 31,000 full time nurses. The country needs to know who is behind the agencies supplying the temporary nurses and what their links are to the Tory party. I’m quite sure I have read that the owner of the top agency for supplying doctor/consultants is strongly connected to the Tories and must be making a fair bit of money as a result of the understaffing in the NHS.
