I almost felt sorry for the DUP. Almost. Their forefathers where victims of history too, Protestant pawns transplanted to prevent European invasion of England via Catholic Ireland.

Took about 400 years for England to betray them, so I suppose they had a good run.

Feels like we’ve gone backward a few centuries in the last few years. Thank you David Cameron.

Don't forget Corbyn. If his seven out of ten had been unconditional support for Remain they would have walked it. I know a few people who took it as a nod and a wink to vote leave.

This is a pretty good overview of the way the troubles started but for more in-depth writings, I'll rummage through my book collection and get back to you.

I have spent the best part of 40 years travelling back and forth to Northern Ireland and the Republic and have many friends over there. It's a fantastic country and the people are something special, at least to me they are. Their history is littered with broken promises and I really do fear for what may happen if this government is less than very careful in its policies and actions.

You could try Nicholas P Canny’s “From Reformation to Restoration; Ireland 1534 - 1660”.

Or “The Oxford Companion to Irish History” - SJ Connolly for a broader overview.

JC said he was in favour of remaining in the EU, by a factor of 70/30, or 7 out of 10.

Jeremy Corbyn said he was 'seven out of ten" on staying in the EU. That statement was made back in 2016 though.

There is an excellent lecture on youtube given by Sir Ivan Rogers to Glasgow Univesity. As ex envoy to the EU I guess he knows what he is talking about, if he is right then the scale of the disaster is as yet un contemplated.
