My second biggest pet hate after corners not clearing the first defender is players slipping on the pitch. I wouldn't say it's been frequent this season but sometimes when players have slipped I do wonder whether they are wearing blades or studs. When I use to play I wore good old fashioned studs and I'm sure I didn't slip as much as some players do today. Does anyone know whether the players have to stick to certain types of boots because of their sponsors or can they wear whatever boots they like ? By that I know that if say a player is sponsored to wear Adidas blades he would obviously normally wear Adidas blades but if he knows it's going to rain surely wearing Adidas studs would make sense. I see that tonight rain is forecast. I hope the players have the right boots on.
Getting the right studs for the conditions is not exactly rocket science is it. Especially when you don't have to pay for the boots yourself. No excuse for slipping at all. Anybody have a pair of those boots in the seventies that had a studded swiveling section to allow you to turn on a sixpence. They were withdrawn when the casualty departments on a Saturday morning became filled up with broken ankles.
Could it be as much to do with modern surfaces as the studs? Although as Ernie says, shouldn't be hard to find a suitable stud for any conditions.
You can't beat the old leather studs with three big nails coming through the sole and fastening the foot firmly inside the boot, wonderful grip all round.
No player will have to wear blades or studs due to sponsorship and I think nigh on every boot is available with both anyway. With how much they water modern football pitches I don't think blades hve a place on them anyway.
Not too much slippage to be fair. Hate slippage. Hence the driving gloves. Extra purchase on the wheel.
