Agreed, but this is like your boss turning around tomorrow and saying they're removing the bonus scheme entirely. I assume you'd feel a bit aggrieved. Footballers at the top end earn silly money, whether it be the £500k per week or the young players on £4k per week in the youth team. Within that particular bubble our players have a good reason to be miffed, I'm starting to wonder why anyone would want to be associated with our club in any way. It's all ****, layer upon layer of **** - Rafa shouldn't walk, he should run.
Nothing will change until we are relegated again and he goes. It really is that simple. We are in for some hard years and there is nothing we can do about it.
Meanwhile wolves splash 18m on Traore. Ashley must look at the prices surely and say. I cannot compete with this I need out now while I still have a club to sell.
I like the idea that players are incentivised to win. All of us complain when players don’t pull their weight. Pity it cant be more based on individual performances but I guess that they would be fighting each other then to make tackles or score goals.
A collective win bonus per match does it for me. Win as a team and you get rewarded. Lose as a team and players look around at the ones who are not pulling their weight. Having said that why would Ashley want a performance related play anyways as he does not want us to be successful.
Thats not true - its just he defines success as avoiding relegation. Nothing else counts. A collective win bonus per match would be a good thing and then tier it according to the opposition. So beating Man City earns them 5 times what they would get for beating Cardiff. Include Rafa in it as well so he might stop trying to shut up shop against the top teams
Disagree - if the industry standard, in whatever line of work it is, is to receive a bonus and yours is the only boss to want to pay a fraction/not pay the bonus then you'd be pretty pissed off as well. Just reeks of amateurism and penny pinching from Ashley
It is a given that players in the premiership earn obscene amounts of money, however it appears that in some reports the dispute is not about bonuses per se,but about 'image rights' where a player endorses a product in return for a percentage of the sale. If players have entered into an agreement they have every right to react if Ashley is looking to modify the agreement to the financial detriment of the individual. It is beyond doubt that Ashley is a penny pincher,he embraces low wages and zero hours contracts, and working conditions at his Shirebrook complex resulted in an appearance before a house of commons select committee who asked him to explain his behaviour. It is unfortunate that this dispute should occur less than a week before the new season starts as it puts Rafa Benitez in the invidious position of having to create a team into a cohesive unit and at the same time motivate a group of discontented players. Ashley should be aware that chaos in the boardroom leads to chaos on the pitch. He needs proof of that? Take a look at Leeds United and, more recently, your friends down the road - successive relegation's says it all. It is sad to see a once proud club turned into a laughing stock by the actions of one man,and it is to be hoped that Ashley sells up and is replaced by an owner who returns Newcastle to it's former glories
I seem to remember you worked in the HR Department - giving ****ers like you a bonus scheme is even dafter than giving footballers one. At least they actually contribute to the success of the club.
I remember the great Obafemi Martins had a scoring clause. In some ways it brought amazing screamers, in other ways I remember him consistently trying to shoot when he should have passed. Regardless, Fat Mike can't expect to give heavy financial reward for a team to avoid relegation then take it away when they exceeded expectations and finished 10th. As you say, it's a pity if certain players don't pull their weight but I don't think that could be levelled at any of our lot last season.
Just to echo some comments here but regardless of whether we agree with this bonus system or not, if it was offered to players and mutually agreed, it has to be paid. Presumably this issue doesn't occur at other clubs so we really need to get out act together.
Presume last seasons was paid. The problem is about agreeing the deal for this year. Its counterproductive when bonus schemes actually cause problens like this.
We already show up for the big teams anyway, giving the players more incentive for that is not the answer !
Hmmm.... don't think that Rafa needs the extra bit of cash when if he goes for wins in the hope of a few extra £. In fact no manager would especially seeing as most clubs have trigger happy owners who have a couple of losses and it's Alan Pardew in for you!
I assume you're speaking metaphorically here. I mean, just imagine if two Newcastle players got into fisticuffs on the pitch! Fortunately that would never ha.... ...oh.
I agree. A well managed organisation wouldn't let them become a problem, either by managing expectations or by fulfilling them. If there is a general expectation amongst your staff that they will receive something you don't intend to give, you've mucked things up somewhere along the line.
I strongly suspect that Mr Justin Barnes is behind this and he is trying to 'hardball' the players. Another clueless ****er dipping his fingers into daily club business and making a complete hash of it. Ashley had to 'step in' last season apparently which suggest to me that he isn't the one doing the negotiating.
Now that they've got the bonus sorted, the players can get their fingers out and start earning it on Saturday.
