I see Phil Neville has come in for a lot of stick for his monotone, yet actually quite astute, comments. Mind you, he has got a long way to go to beat Barry Davies who would make a commentary on a Roman orgy sound boring.

Pierce apart, oh and legard too, most main commentors are good but the co commentators are generally awful, yes I'm look at you Townsend.

Neville knows his stuff but they should use his voice for sleep hypnosis.

Some of them are naturals but for the rest of them, Neville included ............. he'll find his feet or should I say rhythm, before too long.
Here in Oz, a recently retired legend in the NRL ( Darren Lockyer ) has become a tv pundit.
He has a wealth of knowledge and a brilliant rugby league mind but his voice is so gruffled, it's sounds shocking so channel 9 just put him on in short bursts.

I guess Auntie saw Gary doing well on Sky and thought they'd go for what was the next best thing. It's a shame Sky didn't recruit Barry Chuckle...

Alistair McGowan critiques Phil Neville's punditry

Phil Neville has been the subject of wide-ranging criticism following his role as a pundit in England's World Cup opener against Italy on Saturday.

Impressionist Alistair McGowan offers his view, along with the opinions of of Roy Hodgson, Gary Lineker and William Hague.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Monday 16 June.

Peter Brackley and Ray Wilkins on Football Italia in the 90s was the dream team for me.

Not too much in the way of insightful tactical observations, granted. But they just both seemed to take so much joy in it.

I liked the avuncular tones of Barry Davies, so much better than John "this is England's biggest victory over Germany since the war" Motson.
