Good to hear, right man to give the job to, have to realistic for a club of our size he's a good footballing man and can make us a tough little outfit and make us into a Walsall type team that promotes youth and gets into the top 10 of this league. Look forward to seeing who has been release now!
http://www.kentonline.co.uk/kent/sport/gills-boss-peter-taylor-handed-16745/ I would imagine that Taylor will let the players know his decision as to who he wants to keep tomorrow. He reiterated that they can't be left in the lurch.
I agree, he's been in the same position as them since christmas, common courtesy to let them all know as soon as possible so they can try and sort out contracts or trials elsewhere. Think we will all find out on monday though!
slightly off topic but also new MEMS four year deal worth half a million BBC Radio Kent Sport ‏@BBCKentSport 6m #gills announce a further four year sponsorship with MEMS worth half a million pounds in total.
Really not sure how I feel about PT. On 1 hand I'm pleased there will be a bit of stability at the club, and I'm pleased it's sorted so things can hopefully more on for next season. On the other hand though, I never wanted him back, his tactics and team selection have been baffling at best, he's so negative and quite frankly down right boring. He will get my full support though.
Personally I'd feel happier if he was given a different role, maybe director of football type thing, and a new coach was brought in. Some one who he could support and guide but who was a bit more positive and energetic. I think that could work well.
Midfield general, and new defence OK? And replacement goal nets - must be worn out after this seasons defending PS Congrats to the team on our survival - thanks to all
I'm broadly in favour - let's face it we probably would have gone down if we'd stuck with Martin Allen, and Taylor kept us up. Whether he should have been selected at that time is now history - he was, he's done his job, so it's really only fair that he should be given the chance to take the club forward. Let him be judged on what he achieves next season.
Certainly not happy with the decision and I'm sure many people will agree. There's a reason why yesterday's atmosphere was so poor. We were 16th when he took over, with all of his changes and different style of play it lead to the dizzying heights of 17th. The fact he is now going to be in charge of transfers really worries me. Of all of the people he brought in only Hewitt and Mousinho did themselves justice. As for Daniels, Pigott, Innis, Marriott and Smith we were better off with what we already had. Worrying times ahead.
Following the debacle at Orient I was quite outspoken about Taylor and the lack of real progress made under his 'leadership', but I do agree that stability is a good thing and that in the main his teams in the past have tried to get the ball on the deck and play. Now we await the retained list and some new faces to integrate with whats left. In all honesty with the exception of Nelson I am not sure that any of the players out of contract should be offered new deals. I hope for progression to top half next season and I hope that Peter Taylor is still the manager because if he is it will mean that we have done OK.
Having kept us up Taylor has achieved what he came to do and in most jobs that would be enough to ensure continuation in the same role, whether this is good or bad remains to be seen but at least the decision was made early hopefully meaning we can start working on player recruitment for next season sooner rather than later
The problem with Taylor is that he wants to play a style of football which the current squad can not or won't play. Taylor likes a patient style of play, waiting for the opposition to make a mistake and then hitting them on the break, but the current squad in more thud and blunder players. It will be interesting to see if Taylor can turn it around but it will take some heavy investment
The Gills Peg Leg - I agree with you. I have stated that i will give PT my natural support next season but i cannot for the life of me accept that PT did a better job than MA, because in my eyes he didn't. Simply because there can be no measure other than to say Peter Taylor has kept us in L1. But some people throughout social media outlets seem to contradict themselves. They will say it was MA's squad, so surely that means that Martin Allen's squad kept us up then! Whereas i think to the contrary, Taylor made changes and failed to improve. Noting i used the word improved, rather than achieve. Unless you rightly count achieving as maintaining L1 status. But as you have pointed out TGPL, when the current manager took over we were 16th but we finished 17th, so MadDog was the achiever of the higher position and after only ten games, whereas the latter was done after 36, so nothing improved and a lesser position was placed. When the season started everyone was saying how difficult our start to the season was...ok, let's forget Colchester, it happened. Then look at his next three games, Wolves (convincing Champions) - Brentford (auto promoted) - Swindon (vying for playoffs). Not the easiest start by any stretch of the imagination, enough to demoralise any team. Imagine then, the big boss man turning up at Shrewsbury, having not spoken to the incoming manager - huh! So in he comes and what happens, Brackley, must be MA's fault, what happens next Rotherham and Notts County, must be MA's fault, then Leyton Orient, our worst humiliating defeat since the days of Stimmo, must have been MA's fault. MA spent all the budget, so that didn't help PT...whoooaa...hang on a minute, what budget did the snarling man spend?...he brought in Cody, you all wanted him, he brought in Bayo...players player of the year...he brought in Nelson, England's number one. Seems a sound use of budget to me. So what did happen to the pennies from Gazza, Payne and the rest as the crazy one brought in all the other freebies? There is some things i blame Allen for but not the excuses that are being thrown. So who did Peter Taylor bring in, PIGGOTT, excuse me while i roll over laughing. Yeah, Innis was ok, you can't fault injury but you can question Davies' departure on loan. I've never been a supporter of the merry-go-round of management and players, working with old friends has its obstacles, like a manager that works with experienced players but sticks with them despite conceding 79 goals, only Crewe had a worst record. What was behind MA's departure, I saw rumours of a players revolt, well some disagreement might be a more pleasing word(s). But all players have disagreement's don't they at some point, just ask Whelps and Martin, just shake hands and put a sticky plaster over it and all will be well, won't it? Personally I see some departures and you might be surprised at the names. You also might not care, hence we'll give Peter Taylor a clean slate and a fair crack of the whip, at least he got a fair two year contract straight up, unlike the departed, what was it one year and then an added ten games, i forget how that contract worked, enlighten me. Good luck Peter Taylor because your sure going to need it, because those two years will peak with a year left of the five year plan. In readiness for the new ground, wake me up someone, I must be dreaming, either that or disillusioned at what I thought was meant to be. But then the communication out of Priestfield has never been the best.
I completely agree brb. One thing that I have not seen talked about which has surprised me though is the defence. Why didn't MA improve it? Well to be honest at the end of last season the team of the year was pretty much made up of a Gills defence. Why would you change what was the most solid part of of squad the previous season? Taylor had the opportunity to address the short comings in January when the window reopened but failed to do so. MA did not really have a chance to fix it. As by the time it everybody had forgotten that the defence was extremely good last season and realised that it wasn't good enough this MA was gone.
What we need now is an assistant to Taylor to teach players to defend. Taylor obviously can't or doesn't know how to do it,and I cite as an example (theres been plenty more throughout the season) the goal that Shrewsbury scored on Saturday. If you watch it on Youtube you will see the left back swing a cross in, and the Shrews player was standing two yards behind Barrett and 3 yards in front of Martin. For God's sake, that is basic defending to mark your man. It was either Barretts or Martins job to be with the striker. This was not an isolated incident but it shows exactly what we are doing wrong in defence, and worryingly Taylor has had most of the season to address it. New defenders may not necessarily to be the answer if you can teach the ones we've got to defend correctly
I am 50/50 on P.Taylor 50% glad he got a chance as he deserves to at least have a go with his own set of players, and 50% of me wanted to see a younger manager with a fresh approach, but overall happy and looking forward to see what happens in the future with players in and out. Would like to go to a couple pre-season friendlies only went to 2 last year faversham (a) palace (H) p.s glad i have returned here after a spell away, will be no season ticket for me, but looking to go regularly and sit in the same block if possible.
