Our double winning right back Peter Baker has died aged 84. Was before my time so never saw him play but he'll always be remembered for his part in that fantastic team. RIP
Couple of pages devoted to him on the OS: http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/peter-baker-270116/ http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/tributes-to-peter-baker-270116/? Hope the club find time to do something for him. Definitely deserves it.
RIP Peter. Long before my era but greatly contributed towards a huge part that made this club great and for that I truly thank you.
Hear, hear One thing I find strange - and to be honest I am never clear about formations in those days, but Maurice Norman says How does that work - there were 3 players in our 2? There were 2 behind the defenders?
As far as I remember the 2-3-5 referred to the fact that there were two full backs, three half-backs and five forwards in a traditional team. But the centre-half used to play in between the full backs, marking the opposing centre forward, and the other half-backs and the two inside forwards were really defensive and attacking midfield so I think it was really 3-4-3
Norman used to play between Blanchflower and Mackay in those days.but Bill changed it a little for away European games.
Keeper. Left back. Right back. Left half. CentreHalf. Right half. Outside left, Inside left. Centre forward. Inside right. Outside right. Cliff Jones was on the left wing and used to cross beautiful balls for Bobby Smith to put them away. Arsenal had Johnny McCleod. RIP Peter Baker, another of the double winning team gone.
