OK. This may come as a shock to some, but there are a number of white lines on the pitch. Some of them form a space known as the PENALTY AREA. If you commit a FOUL (not FOWL) in the PENALTY AREA you concede what is called a PENALTY. The ball is placed on the PENALTY SPOT. The goalkeeper must remain on his LINE. The 'LINE' forms part of the pitch boundary but more specifically with regard to penalties it is the section between the POSTS.

Apart from the player taking the PENALTY (known as the PENALTY-TAKER) and the goalkeeper, all other players must stand outside the 'D' which is a circular arc of 10-yard radius centred on the PENALTY SPOT. When the referee blows his WHISTLE (an object in the referee's mouth used to to make a shrill noise to gain the attention of the players) the PENALTY-TAKER will shoot at goal with the object of SCORING (getting the ball past the goalkeeper into the net).

If he succeeds in SCORING then the team's score is incremented by ONE (the integer between zero and two).

GARRY MONK DOES NOT FORM PART OF THIS PROCESS

Aswan, I apologise for going off topic but I was responding to something that Dai brought up. I will respond further to Dai because of the tone of his reply to me then contribute about PENALTIES if I have something to say about them.

Dai, you referred to a point I made as "rubbish". I will firstly defend what I said. If Laudrup thinks so highly of Monk as a player, would you like to explain to me why he categorically informed Monk earlier in the season that he was NOT part of his plans and would not take issue if Monk looked for another club? In other words, Dai, he was saying, get out. Plain enough for you?

As it happens, because Chico was injured, Laudrup had no option other than to call on Monk because A) He has little faith in Tate and B) Bartley is still out. In fairness to Monk, he did an adequate job when he came in but no more than that. I guarantee you that when Chico and Bartley are fit Monk won't even smell the bench let alone get a start.

Now, Dai, a word about you calling my pov "rubbish". Disagree by all means but show some respect please. I have seen many posts by you that contain some of the most unmitigated garbage that I have ever read but I showed restraint, and respect, by not calling you out on them. I shrugged my shoulders and moved on despite a great compulsion to do otherwise. It is very easy to lose all sense of perspective in these situations and I have no wish to get involved in slanging matches with anyone. We have all seen how badly that sort of thing damages the board.

I live by the creed, "never burst another man's bubble". That does not mean to say I will accept any c**p from anyone. I won't. Period. So, what I'm saying to you is, if you disagree with anything I say, which of course is your right, please afford me the same respect which I have given you in the past.

Thankyou Aswan I've got it now and I promise to talk about penalties not Garry Monk.

I know Sincalair missed against Man City so when was the last one we scored or conceded for that matter ?

Aswan, just for you, now Sinclair has gone, who do you and the other posters think should be our designated penalty taker? JdG, Graham and Ki are all known exponents of the dead ball kick but, coming from left field, thinking back to the many times I watch the lads at shooting practice in training, there is one player who can strike a dead ball as well as anyone and better than most. His name? Angel Rangel. Believe me, he can hit them and I've seen it from very close up.

Ivor, you're fine to go off topic. I was just feeling in a frivolous sort of mood. No need to apologise :)

Interesting Re:Rangel, but I would expect JDG if he's on the pitch.
