For whatever reason, he's not going to play week in week out here. Must be one of the high wage earners, I'd like him shipped out unless he's going to play regularly. I do find Mick's reluctance to use him baffling, from what I've seen he looks a good player.
and replace him with who? In Taylor we have a potentially excellent winger that at the very least is a great player to have in the squad, it's unfortunate that he's never quite reached full match sharpness but if he wasn't in Micks plans he'd be back at P'boro by now.
Ideally I'd like him replaced, or given a good run in the side. The latter seems very unlikely to happen, so I'll have to go with the former. Lets be honest he's behind McGoldrick/Murphy/Nouble - Nouble in particular, not sure why..... and certainly E Banks Blake when back. Wing wise, he's behind Tabb/ Hunt LM ( Tabb I'm not a fan of wide however Mick is.... again not sure why bar workrate ) and Edwards/Anderson on the other flank. He's clearly better than Edwards who is patently passed it, or Tabb out wide. Probably should be lining up on the right with Hunt on the left, however this isn't going to happen! As you've said with Taylor we have " potentially excellent winger ". The same could be said of JET. At the end of the day, for the amount of minutes Taylor gets, he is simply way way way to expensive to be on our books. He was an unused sub at Leeds, same again at home to Reading, 28 minutes away to Millwall, 17 minutes away at Preston. He couldn't even get into Mick's lineup in an FA Cup tie Mick wasn't hugely worried about. He was excellent at home to QPR, I thought he played very well. For whatever reason Mick doesn't fancy him. He must be on around £9000 upwards I would imagine, and it's not financially sensible to keep him.
The problem Taylor has I think is that he's a very unpredictable player and Mick prefers his players to be predictable, he wants to know what he's going to get from his players, Taylor is not that type of player. As I've said it's a shame and one of the frustrations for me that Mick often overlooks talented players for solid reliable players, you need reliable players in the team but it's about balance. It's frustrating when you see Mick giving the chances to a player like Nouble but JET didn't get much of a look in and similarly it looks like Mings is more likely to get a chance than Hewitt, if Mick can get the best out of average players why can't he work with the more talented ones??
I guess you've answered your own question ITFCPTC, the more talented ones often go missing for a few games and we cannot afford that to happen. However, look at Blackpool second half we took the game to the opposition and pulled off a good win! I think a Mick side with investment and stronger in general will allow him to have faith in a potentially brilliant/potentially the opposite wide boy. Until we have what Mick really wants in the middle of the park I don't see this changing any time soon sadly!
ptc I think you are making a sweeping generalisation when you say that Mick cant work with talented players! Who brought in McGoldrick, Skuse and Hunt? JET was a Maverick and no team in our position can afford to carry these types of players!
About time people got over JayE Thomas he showed a few times that he can play a bit but nowhere near enough, at Bristol he has scored a few goals in a team that is struggling in a league below us so it sounds like he is a luxury that they have accommodated at the cost leaking goals........I could be wrong I don't watch the games.
I think it's a generalisation that is correct though. With the exception of McGoldrick whilst the other 2 are good players, they're still grafters over talent really. And Skuse is a limited player or more so he limits himself and as I've said that is what I feel Mick does sometimes. He's a very good manager and talented but he limits his own talent sometimes by not working with talented players or taking risks. Which has been a criticism levelled at him by all his previous clubs. You need a balance to the team. I just find it frustrating that he has more patience with very average players like Nouble, Hyam, Mings etc but players with more talent who I feel he could get alot of out he just doesn't seem to click with
Unused sub again today v Bolton. Costing us way way way too much for the amount of minutes he's getting.
It's a good point you make there Westy. He is probably one of the better paid players and he hardly gets used. You can bet your last quid that if we sell him he'll be properly utilised by his next team and look like a world beater
We're still getting results though. I do sometimes think could we be doing any better if we were to change it up a bit. We're not doing too badly with how Mick sets us up, so not much to gripe about really.
I think if we changed things about and played more flare players we could find that we are not as solid a unit as we are now, I think Mick likes to know what he will get from a player 100% of the time rather than a player that one day will be awesome but the next 3 games he could be dogshit. That said I think that any new faces in the summer will be to add flare and attacking guile which I think by then we will have had a solid side that has put behind the habit of folding under sustained pressure which we saw early last season.
Apparently back from teeth issues, fit, and not even in the squad at home to Blackpool yesterday. I would say his time with us is 100% up, he's going to play so few minutes these next 16 games lets get him out on loan at least so another club can subsidise the wages. Must be something going on behind the scenes, he clearly offers more than Nouble, and from what I've heard from posters on TWTD, SEB looked well off the pace and not remotely fit.
Just not a Mick type player really. Last season when Mick came in we all questioned the future of JET and then Taylor, Mick just isn't comfortable with their unpredictability. Similarly I think many of us were surprised when he signed a player like Wordsworth and it seems that it indeed wasn't really a very Mick like signing. I geuss it depends what view you have on a player, myself I judge mostly on how a player plays in possession (particularly more attack minded players and midfielders) as to whether they have had a good performance, hence why I'd say Nouble and Hyam have been fairly poor this season and then players like Taylor and Wordsworth although haven't been great in their cameos have shown more on the ball than either of those to similar to JET last season, in terms of minutes on the pitch he had by far the highest assist % but Mick seems to not mind players having bad games when in possession of the ball as long as they do well off of it. Which is why he favours Nouble and Hyam over players like Taylor, Wordsworth and JET who seem to make 1 poor mistake or have one bad game and are out of the team whereas he gives far more patience to others. It's a shame IMO as although a team needs to have many players who do their jobs off the ball you need a balance and some players who will add a bit of creativity and do the unexpected from time to time. As I've said it's a shame he doesn't have the patience or desire to work with certain players who have ability yet others like Nouble and Hyam he does. That's where my frustration lies with Mick sometimes he's clearly a very good competant manager but he limits himself sometimes with the type of player he works with and his style of play. Look what he can get out of average players, so imagine what he could get out of more talented ones!!
FAO Mike Holmes - http://th.soccerway.com/players/paul-taylor/53414/ Here are the fixtures Taylor has appeared in- Interestingly enough, no win first 5...! Win %%% = 30. That said, quite a few from the bench etc..... make of it what you will.
He's still a young lad, he's only 26 - he's got another 10 years to mature into a world class winger.
