Paul Scholes has retired. Legend is an overused word in modern day sport but Scholes is most definitely a legend of that wonderful United midfield of the late 90's. Great passer, great player. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/13600395.stm Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has announced his retirement at the age of 36, with immediate effect. Scholes made his United debut in 1994 and played for them 676 times, and will now join the club's coaching staff. "This was not a decision I've taken lightly but I feel now is the right time for me to stop playing," he said. "Paul has always been inspirational to players of all ages and we know that will continue in his new role," said manager Sir Alex Ferguson. The famously-low key Scholes said "I am not a man of many words but I can honestly say that playing football is all I have ever wanted to do and to have had such a long and successful career at Manchester United has been a real honour. "To have been part of the team that helped the Club reach that 19th title is a great privilege."
whoever did that interview on bbc football wants sacking its one of the worst set of questions and statements ive ever heard!!.
You heard all of the time that Scholes had a problem with his mistimed tackling throughout his career. I loved Roy Keane's comment that Scholes knew EXACTLY what he was doing
http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11667_6964497,00.html? Stoke manager Tony Pulis has revealed he would have offered Paul Scholes a deal if the Manchester United legend had decided to carry on playing next season. The 36-year-old chose to retire with immediate effect on Tuesday and take up a coaching role at Old Trafford. United may have offered him another one-year extension to continue his playing career anyway but, if not, Pulis would have jumped at the opportunity to sign the former England midfielder. "If he'd been available, there's no question I'd have been interested in taking him," he told The Sentinel. "I think there would have been quite a few of us in the Premier League wanting to take someone of his experience and quality. Shame "So from that point of view it's a shame he's decided to retire now because I'm sure there was plenty of fuel left in the tank. "But no-one knows that decision better than the player himself and so you have to respect it." Scholes made 677 appearances for United, winning 17 major trophies while earning 66 caps for England before retiring from international duty in 2004. "He's been one of the great Premier League players for me," Pulis added. "To play nearly 700 times at the top like he has speaks volumes for his ability and the way he's conducted himself. "The only disappointment was his decision to retire from international football when he did." Interesting that Pulis said he would've liked to sign Scholes this summer. Funny he didn't mention that we were in for him about 2 years ago.
