Since we become professional in 1936, we have had 14 permanent managers. The stats show that PJ is only the fourth worst manager we've had (34.9% win rate), behind Jackie Milburn (19.6%), John Lyall (33.3%) and Keane (34.6%). As far as losses are concerened, he is the second worst manager we've had (43 % loss rate) behind Jackie Milburn (59% loss rate) Yes, as you can guess...i'm bored at work and was interested to see how bad PJ actually faired against our previous managers.
The stats suggest that Jewell is worse than Keane! I wonder what the stats say about the worst run of losses or worst number of heavy defeats! What is fair to say is that Jewell is completely useless!
That would be a question to clegg. How can you justify your job when you have employed 2 of the worst 4 managers in Ipswich Towns history?
Warky - sorry mate, havn't got time to assess all 14 managers, but have quickly drawn an assessment of the last 3. Magilton - Averaged 1.29 goals a game for, 1.13 goals against, 1.33 pts a game Keane - 1.06 goals for, 1.23 goals against, 1.16 pts a game. PJ - 1.44 goals for, 1.67 against and 1.31 pts a game. So, PJ has us scoring more (although that won't last this season) Jim - We had the better defence, and amassed more points. Roy - errmm?????? In short, we shouldn't have got rid of Jim!!!
be interesting to see the Jim before ME/ after ME split. He only went down hill when he had loads of money to spend.
Finished 8th, off the play-offs by one point and then he's sacked! THIS is exactly where it went wrong. Magic may not have taken us where we wanted to be but his team was good. We had no left midfield but we played attractive, committed football. ME & Clegg haven't got a ****ing clue about football. Thanks for the takeover but you're still bleeding the club of the money we thought you were going to put in, not take with the other hand. Clegg needs to catch some more snakes, the maggot...
Tractor - Jim had one full season without the ME backing, and two with. All three seasons were almost identical. It's only once ME gave the managers some serious money to spend that it all went tits up.
Stretchy - indeed you are right. The pre money days we were a entertaining team which had a few issues that needed to be resolved but was looking like a good prospect. Unfortunately the money was badly spent and we have spiralled down hill ever since.
Let's just digest that home record: Played 5 Won 0 Drawn 2 Lost 3 This is only the thirteenth season - ever - that Town's first five home league matches at home have failed to produce more than a point a game: 1949-1950 League (3rd Tier) A Scott Duncan P(H)5 W1 D2 L2 F10 A10 Pts5 1969-1970 League (1st Tier) Bobby Robson P(H)5 W1 D2 L2 F3 A3 Pts5 1971-1972 League (1st Tier) Bobby Robson P(H)5 W1 D2 L2 F4 A5 Pts5 2001-2002 League (1st Tier) George Burley P(H)5 W1 D2 L2 F5 A5 Pts5 1938-1939 League (3rd Tier) A Scott Duncan P(H)5 W1 D1 L3 F6 A10 Pts4 1963-1964 League (1st Tier) Jackie Milburn P(H)5 W1 D1 L3 F7 A13 Pts4 1964-1965 League (2nd Tier) Jackie Milburn P(H)5 W1 D1 L3 F6 A13 Pts4 1982-1983 League (1st Tier) Bobby Ferguson P(H)5 W1 D1 L3 F5 A7 Pts4 1985-1986 League (1st Tier) Bobby Ferguson P(H)5 W1 D1 L3 F2 A6 Pts4 1978-1979 League (1st Tier) Bobby Robson P(H)5 W1 D0 L4 F3 A7 Pts3 1994-1995 League (1st Tier) John Lyall P(H)5 W1 D0 L4 F6 A10 Pts3 2009-2010 League (2nd Tier) Roy Keane P(H)5 W0 D3 L2 F3 A9 Pts3 2012-2013 League (2nd Tier) Paul Jewell P(H)5 W0 D2 L3 F5 A9 Pts2 You'll notice that only once before (just three years ago) have we failed to win any of the first five matches. That season, under Roy Keane, you'll remember we finally broke our duck in the eighth home game, against Derby County. Let's hope it doesn't go that long in 2012. <courtesy of Cherry Hinton Blue on TWTD>
We need Dr Sam Beckett to go to 1982 and zapp Bobby Ferguson.. by far the worst modern day manager we've ever had. If only we had gotten someone in after Robson who could've carried on his good work, how different things could've been!!
Very harsh! I think you are getting confused with John Duncan! You may wish to remember that as soon as the new Pioneer stand was built in 1981/82 we had to sell our best players to pay for the damn thing! Muhren, Thjssen, Mariner, Wark & Brazil all within a couple of seasons 1983/84. Ferguson was basically left with the job of fire fighting so we cant judge him too harshly. It wasn't until 1985/86 that we finally went down and to be honest there was an awful sense of inevitability about it, very much like now! Bobby Ferguson was a great coach and had we not made the mistake (all well in hindsight) of building a brand new stand and not investing in the team, history would have judged his record in a much better light. Just to add that during his time he brought in academy players such as Jason Dozzell, Mark Brennan, Mich D'avry & made some quality signings like Romeo Zondervan, Kevin Wilson and John Deehan.
Fast forward to the rebuilding of the North Stand and the same happened all over again. Instead of becoming a settled team in the prem before expanding we used the money on developing the ground and low and behold, had to sell off our stars in quick succession. Whilst it may benefit us in the long run should we ever make it back into the top division there's no doubting that that action took us back a bit too.
To be fair, I was a fan of Jim but by the end the football wasn't great and his tactics weren't great. We looked disjoined above anything!! Easy in hindsight to say it was the wrong decision but it seemed by the end the majority of people wanted him out!!
My own view of jim the manager was he did great without any money but once ME backed him, he was like a kid in a sweet shop. He said to anyone who would listen or put a microphone in his face, that he wanted to sign Norris. Plymouth heard this, knew we had money & basically got double what the player was worth. He also did this with other players. I accept he was a rookie manager but naming players you're after before having a bid accepted is a bit daft as any club with any sense would up the asking price
Jimbo nearly took us to relegation in season 1 – his away from was rock-bottom relegation stuff and home form somewhat stuttering - a decent run near the end of the season gave a semi-reasonable finish (14th, I believe). In his second season his away form was, unbelievably, even worse that in the first season. The first half of the season the home form was very good, that’s when ME took over and decided to keep him in charge. The second half of the season the home form went pear-shaped as well though we somehow finished in what now looks a good upper-mid finish (8?). In Jimbo season three, the away form picked a bit (but nowt special) but the home form went AWOL, as ITFCPTC said we were disjointed, we were frequently clueless and it included some of the very worst performances I’d ever seen (0-2 Wolves at home, for example). It was dire. The only reason we look back fondly on Madge’s reign is that it seems so much better than the nightmare of Keano and PJ – especially PJ’s record of 4+ defeats. As I might have said before, just because the next two were turkeys, it doesn’t mean that the first one was a turkey, it just means he wasn’t quite a big a turkey as the next two turkeys. They were still turkeys. I don’t want anymore turkeys and certainly not a turkey we’ve already had.
I still having a suspision that Jim may have turned it around. In his first season he improved our team fairly markedly compared to Royles last season despite finishing in a similar position. He brought in some good players on a budget and they were generally good honest pros also. If Burley was Robson mark 2 if felt as if Jim was Burley mark 2. And in all honesty in spells we played the best football in its purest form I have seen under and ITFC manager, albeit it was only in spells, he loved playing the triangles. You could see the players had been coached in passing/movement and touch and they had improved on the previous season, Jim put his own mark on the team. Second season our home form at the start was superb culminating in some of the best performances I have seen, we were so dominant, we went into matches knowing we wouldn't get beaten. Our away form was poor but I think we were unlucky at times. It was clear we were short of a couple of real quality places and perhaps a bit more depth to the squad before we could seriously challenge for the league but we were going in the right direction, all we needed was a rich benefactor to come in, back Jim and we'd be there!! Unfortunately when ME came in, I'm not sure ME had a plan (still doesn't) or a clear direction and Jim being a rookie was on a massive learning curve and IMO his mindset changed, he over thought things, rather than playing to our strengths as he did pre ME he first and for most tried to stop the opposition tactics and he tried to make us harder to beat with some average but hardworking players. As any manager of his experience or even an experienced manager he made mistakes and his stubborness did not help him and I think due to this he burnt alot of bridges, add to this the sudden increase in expectancy from the Ipswich fans and they became inpatient, they wanted to see the improvements asap especially as it felt we were so close to success all we needed was a cash injection, there was a cloud emerging. In his last few matches of the reign the performances were disjointed and we hadn't improved since ME came in, if anything apart from squad depth we had gone backwards (not much) BUT I still believe Jim has the talent to be a very good manager, some of his signings, the visual influence he had on the teams style and some of his tactics point toward this, question marks remain over his temperament but perhaps he would have learnt from his mistakes of those 12 months where we stagnated and if ME and the fans and the press would have stuck by him, we may not have had instant success but I'm pretty sure we wouldn't find ourselves in the situation we are now!!!
