Most have a green tick or something next to where you enter your new password, thus avoiding this sort of thing. Also, I find it highly unlikely that any website would stop you using a password as it's already in use, it isn't a username, so I can't imagine it would have to be unique. I don't think this is real.
sadly fictitious. there is no requirement on any website for unique passwords and revealing that an attempted password matches an existing one would be a massive security failing. otherwise amusing.
