I was out with my dog this morning and found stacks of these:

    Shaggy Parasols.

A neighbour gave me a dozen fresh eggs, from his hens. I've got tomatoes from my greenhouse. Home-baked bread. Bottle of Shiraz.

    Easy....easy....

Dinner by definition is eaten at dinner time i.e. middle of the day. None of this southern ****.

Unless you are some sort of foreigner i.e. outside of Yorkshire (assuming we consider the unitary authority of Hull as being within Yorkshire).

Seriously though, I'd never heard of dinner referring to an evening meal until I was at least a teenager. Did I lead a sheltered childhood or has popular local usage changed in the last 30 years. Dinner in the evening still doesn't sound right to me and I find myself correcting people on it all the time despite understanding it is us in the minority. It's the equivalent of Americanization (sic) in the UK culture to me.

In other news, surely you can do better than a mushroom omelette?

Dinner time is middle of the day, tea time is evening meal time.

I was thinking of beans on toast for tea.

OK all of you. My apologies (I've been 20 years south of God's Own, now.)

But I don't have a dinner in the middle of the day. Just a snack (= lunch?). Then a big meal (= my dinner) at tea-time.

It's so friggin' confusing, being shipwrecked on a foreign shore.

    Bear with me.

    (Still'n'all - I'm gonna scoff a massive fry-up!)

As long as you don't refer to roundabouts as 'islands' and are still familiar with the terms 'croggie' and 'tenfoot', we'll forgive you!

Roundabouts OK; croggie and tenfoot (or tennie); also bommie (bomb-site) OK too.

    Phew - I hope I'm OK.......

Have you had your tea yet Stan?

I only ask because it's gone tea time but it's not yet time for dinner, so I may not be too late to prevent a vin a faux pas.

Put the Shiraz back in the cellar.

An earthy mushroom like a shaggy parasol should be accompanied by an earthy Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon.

Well, Ernie - I've failed you on two levels.....

    Opened the Shiraz already.
Not started cooking my tea yet.

(The Shiraz was a cheap deal....)

Best way to eat them is to pull the stalk out and fry it for 2 mins then drop an egg in the middle and turn the heat down! Quality breakfast with brown sauce and toast! :)

The egg cooks okay on top of the mushroom or are we talking about under the grill?

We have breakfast, elevenes, lunch, tiffin, dinner and supper.

The evening meal can be, tea, dinner or supper, dependent on where I am and how much is on the plate.

There was a time (sigh) when brunch was no more than an excuse to have chips with a full English breakfast; post hangover, then back on the hoy! <whistle>
