Most of the stuff I like does that to people I know, sadly.

Ive seen Clapton, Kirk Hammett, Jeff Beck, Knopfler, Peter Green and many others. I then went to a Prince concert without willingly wanting to go but my uncle had a spare ticket. I seriously could not believe what I was seeing. He absolutely murdered them. Too many people take shredding for amazing guitar playing, and it sometimes is. But blues etc. is so much harder to play. My uncle has seen Steve Vai, and went as far as saying Prince is better than him. You should check out some more live videos of him playing. He and (although I hate him) John Mayer are a cut above at the minute.

I'm well aware of every guitarist you've posted on there, especially John Mayer and Prince.

In that case you should take the oppurtunity to see him at the earliest moment <ok> Mind = Blown.

Shocking list. I like The Who but Townsend shouldnt be near it. They are blind to only the one genre of music. Where is Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Lee, Tony Rice...

I'm more surprised that they didn't shamelessly stick in Django Reinhardt so that they can claim they looked at other kinds of music.

These sorts of lists are always rubbish. They either just go for most popular guitarist or try to throw a few wild cards in there just so its different to every other list. BTW I'm a massive Jimi Hendrix fan. I think there was one that voted Seven Nation Army the 17th best guitar song of all time.

No Rory Gallgher or Ritchie Blackmore? Knofler has already been mentioned as an amazing omission.

I am astounded to see Townsend in there. He wasn't that good really; he was in a very iconic band, yes, but that was it. When was the last time that you said "Wow, listen to that Townsend solo"? Well, you wouldn't you'd have to listen to Rabbit's keybaords instead. The same could go for Page; his soloing was poor to say the least but at least he could build great riffs.

As a guitarist i completely disagree with this list. Thrash metal guitarists are the best, do these mainstream idiots know how hard it is to play 1000mph riffs? Also, no Dimebag, Kirk Hammett and Dave Mustaine makes this list pointless. I agree with hendrix as the best ever, i would have Page at number 2, Van Halen at 3 etc.

    Edit:

No Randy Rhoads? Are these people high?

Saying Thrash Metal guitarists are the best is just biased.

As a guitarist, i find classic rock easy to play, but thrash is difficult. It's even harder when you're expected to headbang ferociously.

I'd say Blues is hardest, it needs feeling which is where I disagree with you. Thrash may be hard to play but with practice you can achieve that, Blues needs feeling and that's hard to put through. I play guitar to for the record.

Thrash metal guitarists can play fast and technically, but they do not play with any feeling or distinction, they all sound the same. Do not really rate them, there is more to playing guitar well than just playing it really fast.

    Thrash metal <laugh>

Musical accomplishment doesnt begin and end with the level of technical ability and the ornamentation you put in. Alot of thrash metal turns into a boring blur. Tony Rice's bluegrass style has just as much technical proficiency but shows much more musical intelligence in key and chord progressions, style, individualism, adaptability etc..

Stevie Ray Vaughan could thrash his solos out using .12/.13 guage strings, not the regular poncy .9s

If you have been learning guitar with the sole thought that technical skill is the only guage of ability you have already lost

Playing fast doesn't necessarily make you a "good" guitarist. A technically skilled one maybe, but some of the greatest riffs of all time are so simple.

The people who should be considered the "best" are those who helped pioneer new sounds and styles.

I agree with you about Rhoads, he was phenomenally talented, and I love the whole classical/metal thing he had. Hendrix deserves to win it imo
