Not quite as bad as that thankfully but shameful all the same: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/world-war-2-veteran-11-3662672
We were never invaded which to this day I can't understand and fully respect very life that was lost. We should never forget that There was suffering on all sides but we will never know what it was really like I tend to get emotional over Marguerite Rouffanche when she escaped from a church in Oradour where 452 odd were put to death around her Col is right we should never forget but also remember all the deaths ... what have we had 68/69 years of spin to a point whereupon it is now considered that a German/Nazi motorcycle rider on film will always end up in a duck pond! ... Good old BMW they make great bikes but can't ride them And on here we still look at racist signatures about the French ... I despair at it all
I think "all the deaths" are remembered.......from the Allied Armies to the French Resistance and all the innocent people on both sides who lost their lives. The victors write the history, so it is natural that things are recalled from the Allies' point of view. However, the Nazi regime was a hideous incarnation and is correctly vilified.
That analysis, particularly the final sentence, is extremely detrimental to the recording and analysis of historical fact. Fervent nationalism, regrettably to the historian, always gets in the way of accurate investigation of the past.
This is a nice, respectful, elegiac thread. I have no problem with arguments, but start another thread for it lads, if it matters that much to you.
I knew you'd come back with that!!! (COL) The point is, you have a one-sided narrative. And the other Tory boys on here do too. Oddball is very astute in what he says and I think he makes a very important point. I put it to you, Sir, that you suffer from tunnel vision (and no I'm not on the wind up). If I were to post up an elongated list of hideous crimes that were committed in our name, the first thing I expect you'd do (and the others) is precisely what Oddball has done above, IE, attempt to look at things from both sides of the spectrum. Which is all fine and dandy but it becomes a problem when you only do it when your side is the one committing the crimes. Know what I mean?
I think you talk confrontational bollocks. You said that my last sentence was the one you had the biggest problem with..........a sentence that described the Nazi regime as a hideous incarnation. I think that tells us everything we need to know about you. Now.......as Sb says, this is a thread to mark respect, so take it somewhere else.
This completely highlights what a wind up merchant you really are. I totally agree that the victors' writing of history can be biased. But you referred to something totally different, which you knew would rub people up the wrong way. Pathetic!
I'm not too sure what post #52 is specifically alluding to but it certainly goes against the spirit of this fine thread. I'm also pleased that the disrespectful post #21 received the contempt it deserved by being completely ignored. What is it with some people?
