I just watched a video asking whether the insulate Britain protests are justified. In the video he says that 14.6% of the UK greenhouse gas emissions come from homes. He goes on to say that we have the oldest housing stock in Europe and only 10% are better than grade C (on a scale of A to G for energy efficiency). He goes on to mention fuel poverty where people cannot afford to heat their homes. I have no issue with that. I didn't even bother checking the figures. My problem is where he goes from there because, at the moment all the big energy companies have a mandate to insulate the homes of the poorest in society. Not everyone has taken advantage, but that is available now so fuel poverty is being addressed. You can't fix it overnight but there is a direction. My biggest problem with all of it is that there is no mention of people turning the thermostat down a few degrees and maybe putting a jumper on. I absolutely guarantee that pretty much all of that 14.6% emissions come from houses who don't have a problem with the extortionate energy prices to fund this country's green agenda. Energy prices go up to pay for insulating houses of those who could well afford to do it themselves. These high energy prices mean that poorer, not breadline poor, but not well off syruggle to pay their bills. It's this base line working class that carry the can for this green **** all the time. They can't afford a new car so, more often than not, pay a much higher road tax. They aren't poor enough to benefit from the scheme to insulate their home so have to watch the thermostat. I see every winter where, in the freezing cold, the door opens and there is a rush of warm air. People in tee shirts basking in the heat. Insulate Britain should be telling everyone to turn their heating down a couple of degrees and put a jumper on. That would reduce our emissions enormously. I would also propose that your energy price increases the more energy you use. The problem is that this would target the same people who are protesting rather than the poor souls trying to make ends meet.
This CO2 bollox is the biggest tax rip off in history. The planet has always changed its temperature, plants and animals will adapt, like they have for millions of years. Just the doom mongers pulling up stats from the last 20 years to scare everyone.
We are at an incredibly exciting time. There are feasible energy storage solutions in real development and we are on the road to greatly reduce our dependency on fossil fuels. I think that's a good thing because we won't be dependent on Middle East oil barons or Russian gas. Also, as someone who works on his own cars, I like the idea of electric motors with no oil or petrol. It's the future but has nothing to do with climate. It's technological progress, without which we'd still be hunting animals in Africa, if we hadn't been made extinct. I'm pretty sure we could have all of this now but the 1% of the 1% who tell everyone what they can and can't do, haven't allowed it. Without Tesla we wouldn't be anywhere near where we are now. Nothing to do with Greta or any Government, it's Capitalism.
This backs up your point. Energy prices have increased because it hasn't been windy enough and the winter has been colder. I'm sure that the Met Office told us that the last 2 years have been among the hottest on record. I knew that was a load of bolux, this says it out loud.
Some very good points. Technology will always find solutions. Just one question and it may sound a bit daft, where do we plug all these cars in? You can't have cables running across pavements etc, not everyone has a garage or even off street parking Also these cars need a lot of energy upwards of 15 KW to charge them, can the grid hold that massive increase and where will the electric come form? A few wind farms are not going to solve it. More nuclear? Personally I would go for that..
Quite a good video with good explanation of the reasons behind electricity price increases - see I said leaving the EU was a bad idea
You're being selective. What about our lack of wind and the cold winters? The bulk of the gas comes from Russia who aren't in the EU. We could be using our own coal or, as Este says, we could be building more nuclear.
England did have it's own solution, coal, maybe OLOF can elaborate?! Good job my chainsaw is nice and sharp, could be an oldschool winter, logs on the fire.
I don't have the monopoly on being selective To meet the goals of reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and keeping the power going I cannot currently see an alternative to nuclear power, but they take a long time to get approved and built. Nuclear power isn't going to be an easy sell for politicians to make though.
I don't agree with the all or nothing agenda. Zero carbon can never happen. This energy shortage has been exacerbated by our lack of wind. That should be a red flag to the green lobby but they will ignore it. China is actually leading the way in forcing manufacturers to make their cars more efficient. I would get next to zero support but I think they should limit engine size and performance on new cars. Cars don't need to reach more than 100 mph so why make cars that do. That's not a climate thing, it's common sense in my mind. If a car can do 70mpg, for example, then it is efficient enough. We have petrol cars that produce so little CO2 now that they don't pay road tax. How far can we take that? Formula 1 used to use 3ltr engines, I believe they use half that now. I think Mazda, if I'm correct, have decided to make their current cars more efficient rather than go electric. There's a place for petrol and diesel, it's an extremely efficient fuel for that purpose.
Carbon zero is a pipe dream and why most of the politicians talk about nett zero i.e we are still going to be producing co2 but we will buy some carbon credits or something else will be done to offset this. Now if you want to buy some green hydrogen we could well be able to cut you a deal !!!!
Maybe that's it, without CO2 the narcs can't grow, opium, weed or coca plants. So this explains the USA's war on drugs from the 70's onwards, get rid of the V8s and let nature take it's course.
They produce CO2 from fossil fuels for fizzy drinks and in food manufacturing. By far the biggest contribution to CO2 emissions is from concrete manufacturing, not cars or homes. The sheeple only get soundbites from the media. George Monbiot is a scumbag for his "the end of the world is nigh" pieces in the Guardian. Carbon capture credits is a huge money spinning business and lots of the biggest polluters are getting very rich on it. Just as the niggest land owners get stinking rich from the corrupt CAP budget within the EU. It was purported to support small farmers but the vast majority of the money went to huge farming conglomerates. I'm glad we're out of the cesspool
Keep my name out of it .......anyway got a lovely Canada goose parka and loads of candles, warmth and light sorted....zero carbon,100% bull
Your point is lost on greenies. More CO2 means more food for plants which is why people add CO2 to the greenhouse to aid plant growth. I remember it geing said that talking to plants helped because you were exhaling CO2 The biggest lie is the bathtub idea. Even though man made emissions are miniscule in comparison to natural emissions, their argument is that we are upsetting a natural balance. Our emissions, including deforestation, are about 3% of the total. Surely more CO2 means more plants, means more CO2 captured by thebgrowing plants. Natural carbon capture. There are never solutions, only more problems
Good point, A bit like we should all go vegan so there would be no more cows farting. Well maybe we grab a few guns and head off to Africa and exterminate the millions of wildebeest, zebras neus etc, polluting bastards that they are.
