this can be construed two ways though. i mean, how many times are a club like liverpool going to come in for someone like rodgers? he may live to regret that decision the rest of his life if things tail off a bit at swansea. you could say that he is showing faith and tremendous loyalty to the club - i don't think if you're swansea manager you should be turning down the chance to take over liverpool - they are a massive step up and to me it suggests he has doubts about whether he could do the job more than anything else. lambert wouldn't have those doubts because lambert is destined for the top. of course it would be lovely for him to come out and say he's staying with us and we'd all appreciate it but liverpool is a massive chance for a young manager. i think rodgers has doubts about his own ability
as for west brom, the fact they've been a more stable club in the past is of little use. norwich are currently about as stable as possible and the manager we have is the most secure in the league. would definitely be a sideways move
Guess the other way of viewing it is that if he were to leave and fail miserably it could put a huge dent in his career and reputation. It is after all going to be a massive job to get them where they want to be and if he believes he is not ready for it than it could be a wise move. So will either been seen as sensible/loyal etc or unambitious.
Spot on. Villa was seen as a stable club and a massive step up years ago, but not now it's in a right mess good luck who ever takes over there. Randy Lerner would not back O' Neil with funds and he left and I think that would send a worrying message to Lambert and any manager about their future ambitions.
I wasn't for a moment suggesting that PL would leave City for West Brom. I've said all along that I expect him to stay. I was only wanting to point out just what an attractive opening it was. They have stayed off the radar while Villa and Liverpool have grabbed the headlines, which is perfectly in their style. They will make a good sensible appointment in their own good time, someone who will continue the steady progress. My bet would be Hughton --unless having managed Birmingham rules him out.
I can't see Liverpool going for Lambert. They want a big name like Capello or Guardiolla because they are deluded in thinking that they are a top club in the premier league still. Based on history they are but not now with the 2 Manchester clubs, Chelsea and Spurs getting stronger. They are miles off at the moment but their fans still think they are "up there" totally deluded. I mean do you really think Pep will go to mid table EPL club? What world are they living in?
massive to rodgers for loyalty. although, he is playing it safe. probably remembers well his time at reading where it did go pete tong. anyone heard any whispers about our boss?
Unusually, I disagree almost entirely with you on this, Superman. How much confidence in one's ability would it show to take a job like that on the basis that you might not get the chance again? It would show a lot more confidence to say: this ISN'T going to be my one and only chance, I've no need to take right now. I agree that people are almost certainly overplaying the loyalty thing, but there are many, many reasons why Rodgers would choose to stay with Swansea at the moment, just as there are many many reasons why PL would choose to stay with City.
Can anyone here foresee circumstances where Lambert would get the sack from here?.Personally if a year on we had finished where Wolves have just done, bottom and points adrift,I don't think any of us would be say sack him.More likely we would be saying "See you all next year". If that happened at Villa or WBA it would be curtains and hello Colchester Town.
I agree with robbie. If Rodgers (and Lambert, for that matter) stay put at their current clubs for one more season minimum, and keep them in the Prem again, it helps prove they're no 'flash in the pan' or 'one-trick pony'. Looks better on their CV. The loyalty thing is an added bonus - for Swansea and Norwich fans particularly. Take Martin O'Neill as an example, his worth rose due to his dedication to see the job through at Wycombe and Leicester rather than jump ship at the first sign of more dollars.
Lambert and McNally do have a very good relationship, which was started years before either man considered Norwich. I believe Lambert was the first and only choice after Gunn left and I think he was sort of lined up before. I know we go on about Lambert being an ambitious manager but this is an ambitious club and DM is an equally ambitious man. Don't rule out the power of relationships.
to a degree, i was playing devils advocate, but i really don't understand why he wouldn't at least want to find out a bit more about the job and what they wanted from him. its not disloyal to have a chat and find out - absolutely nothing wrong with testing the water. they obviously were keen to get him or they wouldn't have asked for permission. i find it slightly odd, thats all. to me, it shows a lack of ambition more than a lack of loyalty but as i say, it can be construed either way. for instance, i would have expected lambert to attend an interview even if he then decided it wasn't for him. you never know in football. a poor start for swansea next year and he'll slip under the radar. good for swansea that he's staying of course!
Fair play Rodgers, be interesting to see what lambert does soon. Not sure if we'll get any movement today
It could be that Brendan Rodgers is the kind of chap who is happy where he is and loves the adulation that he gets from Swans fans. They both deserve their success and long may it continue. What a relief when someone says "Actually more money won't make my life better" I rather admire that philosophy and try to follow it myself.
