I think Nolan would have been a waste of space for us this year and we'd end up feeling the same about him as we do Smith. Much rather have Guthrie and Gosling on the bench than Nolan.

Naturally he's bitter, he wanted to stay. I know what you're saying about respect, I just think its incredibly naive in modern football to expect players not to comment. These journalists are sticking questions to them which are fully loaded, knowing full well he'll get a nice quote because its still a sore subject. I don't find anything particularly disrespectful in what he's said. He'd like Joey Barton in his team? I'm sure he would like a player on the fringes of England in a championship squad. Particularly as its his big mate. He's commented on Barton being treat poorly? Most of our players have received some shoddy treatment in my opinion. Whereas the Nolan and Enrique may not understand why, I do.

As for Nolan the player, I was his biggest critic in when we came up, I didn't think he'd cut it in the PL. I was 100% wrong. He did a fantastic job for us and I'd loved to have kept him and added the new players. I'd much rather we got rid of the dross like Guthrie and Smith. But Danny is on cheap wages and Smith wants his money. Something had to give and Nolan was pushed out. Such is life, I wish him well and hope he has a good end to his career. Another lad who's deeds while with us should always be remembered.
For the record he would have done another sterling job this year in my eyes. His level hasn't changed for 3 years, because his game is not based on pace or agility.

I'll be honest, this is the one thing that grinds on me most about the Newcastle not606 board. You talk about respect but to me its seems like many forget its a two way street. Every player that leaves us in recent times from what I can see is a target for booing and underhand comments once they move on. Its always they have wanted to leave, constantly ignoring that it is probably circumstance that has made them want to leave. That isn't their fault, they have to look after their careers and families. The club has not been at its best in recent times and thus you're not such an attractive option to players. I just think its such a shame people can't accept it for what it is. Players move on in football and it doesn't always have to end sour. But for many this has been the case in the Barton, Enrique, Nolan, Carroll sagas. To my end I wish each and every one of them well and say thanks for unwavering committment while you were on our books.

Each to their own hence I rarely comment but its a side of football that is changing, and I'm not particularly keen on it.

Carroll when he played for us flattened everything to win a ball, he just piss farts about and only gans for a header if its planted on him, also doesn't ever try to win the ball on the floor. I remember for us he used to just never stop defensively or in attack, lots of standing still for the bin dippers.

How is it naive? <doh>. You don't say **** like this. Period. This is a professional sport with professional footballers, and they need to keep their gobs shut. Most of them actually do, but Nolan didn't. If you're in a rival club you keep your mouth shut on other affairs and ONLY talk about your club. What you don't do is try to unsettle one of our key players and get in yet another couple of digs at our club. As fans, we don't want that, so if he has any respect for us, he should just stay quiet.

The fact that he might be being honest doesn't make it right. You act like they're children and if they say something out of line it's a case of "oh well you can't blame them they're only footballers".

Nolan could have stayed, but we wouldn't have offered him the large contract which would have took him into his mid-30's, so the only way to get his nice long contract and wage packet was to drop down into the Championship. It was purely a money-driven move. 110%. I have no respect for any player who doesn't get the money he wants, throws a hissy fit, changes clubs and then acts all bitter.

I don't suppose you saw the thread I made where one of my NUFC supporting friends saw Nolan at a festival? He went over and Nolan said "I don't play for Newcastle anymore, **** off". He has no respect for the fans anymore and he's incredibly bitter. You're right that it's a two-way street. He has to give it to the fans of this club if he wants any respect back. So far, he's just stirred ****.

And we have to look after our club. Should we have given him a huge contract and huge wages just so he could rack up a few more million quid before he retired? What we offered Nolan was FAIR to both parties. He got a contract extension to his existing two year remaining contract. Nolan wanted more which was unfair to the club.

People do accept it for what it is. Money-driven moves which go against everything they've ever said about loving this club. Perhaps Enrique is the only guy who didn't leave purely for monetary reasons. However, Carroll and Nolan did, so I have no respect for them. Again, show respect to the club and it's fans, and we will show respect to them. Praising the club, loving the club and then ****ing off as soon as more money is on the table is not respect.

Chappaz - Needless to say I disagree with your standpoint on most issues. I don't think anyone has left for money. I think people have left because the club is not in a position to sustain the wages/length of contracts/ambitions players of their ilk demand. And I stand by the comment about it being naive to expect players not to comment. Most DO NOT stay quiet as you suggest. Indeed I reckon almost 90% of footballers comment on their previous club after they leave, and 100% are asked the question. Some will be positive, some will be negative, that is football and always has been. Fans should not take it personally in my opinion. Tapping up other players throught the media is common place. Players are asked if they'd like to see players at certain clubs join them, if its a good player they always answer. To suggest they should keep their gob shut is just mad in my book and is never going to happen. A prime example being Barca and Fabregas, this **** goes on whether we like it or not.

As for the rest about players, fair enough we're just polar opposites and all opinions are valid. I have a lot of respect for all four players, what they've done for the club and the way they've conducted themselves while representing the club. Barton has his moments but I think you are aware of those downsides when you buy him. Carroll is young and made typical young man with money mistakes. On the pitch none of them ever let us down, and two of them have rightly moved on to much better things. I wish them all well and I'm just grateful they were with us in our hour of need. Hopefully the suits will see sense and give Barton the contract he richly deserves but I have a feeling his number is up in their book.

This! He doesn't seem to give two ****s now...

On topic: I don't mind Nolan to be honest, he left purely for money but he still gave us some great memories, and i rather he left on a relative high than became a burden to the team and club. Who knows he might be a right dickhead when he's not played and could've ruined future morale

You say players haven't left for money, but you say they've left for wages and the length of their contracts, i.e. money. No offence but are you autistic or something?

It's very different. The players who are asked that questions say "yeah sure he's good". Nolan has went into an awful lot of detail about it and topped it off with a few digs at the club, saying he's "probably looking for an escape" and speaking on behalf of Barton like he wants to leave. Show the many other footballers who make media comments like that? It's went from the realms of normal media-talk into a very disrespectful thing to say.

I respect what they've put in, but to be fair, that's what they get paid to do. They come in, play their football and do their best. It's what's expected of them, and it's what every player in every club does. The REAL respect is found at levels beyond that, and all of the players have let us down in various ways and lost my respect. Moving purely for more cash, broken promises, lies, making bad comments about the club, leaving the club in the lurch and so on. I have no qualms with a player who wanted better things and left on purely amicable terms, wishing us the best, but so far, none of them have done that.

There's a lot of long comments on here that I can't be arsed to read. But IMO, I'll always respect Nolan for what he did for us last season and in our promotion season. But there's no need for him to come out spouting rubbish now, he left with the respect of a lot of the fans, he's now jepordising that with some.

Sometimes players leave a club and make comments about the board, or the manager, or even the club in general regardless of the impact it has on the fans even though the fans may have held the player in high regard. We all know it happens and there's not a great deal that can be done once they've left the club, but this incident of Nolan commenting on Joey Bartons situation whilst Barton is still with us is a disgrace.
I always liked Nolan, he was a great captain, and I wish him well, but he should only be commenting on his own circumstances and not anybody elses.
