Syd, Me Mam used to work in the Cafeteria at DJB for years (Sandra) and I can't remember who me Dad used to drive for.
Wasn't JHM Taxi's was it Horden? They got put out of business during the minors strike for taking "scab" minors to work. Their cars got wrecked by the strikers. Ripped my family apart that strike Not saying your dad drove scab minors mind!
Yes, my dad worked there during that time. Billy Walshe was his name, an Irishman and proud of it. He was pals with an old Scottish guy who liked his drink and manned the main gate IIRC?
My dad was a miner Dorset and started Taxying after the pit closed. I'm so glad I didn't go down there when I left school. Got so many mates who did and now there screwed.
Small world mate. Mining was my second choice if I didn't get in the army. So glad I did! Like I said earlier, the strike ripped my family apart, with some working and some striking. Most have never spoken to each other since.....very sad
I know plenty of families in the same boat mate. I joined the RAF to get away from it and never looked back. Still go back every few years to see the parents and me mates but wouldn't want to live there again.
I did exactly ths same thing mate. Get up there when I can, the last time being about 4 months ago, but would never consider moving back. I had the chance to make a new life for myself thanks to the army, so I took it and have never looked back. I come from a large family, but I'm the only one that lives outside of the North East. I get to as many away games as I can, living down in Dorset, but you would not believe how expensive match days have become! shocking really as it is the working class that make up the majority of the support.
Just browsing. Hordens first post. Some of the old names man. We never seem to get any 'hey there new poster here' threads. Some cracking lads been and gone.
