Has anyone seen this? http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/19418979 There's talk of it being introduced into the Premier League. I can't believe the idea is even being mooted to be honest. To me it comes across as very petty and small-minded, and I know I'd be genuinely offended if I was Black/Asian/etc.
I follow the NFL closely and the "Rooney Rule" is ridiculous. I've been "supporting" the San Francisco 49ers since I was a kid. The previous coach was Mike Singletary, a black, Hall of Fame former player with the Bears (played in the same team as "The Fridge"). He was sacked before the season ended and obviously the hunt was then on to find a new coach. All the names in the frame were white coaches, so what they did was interviewed the black Quarterback coach who never stood a chance of getting the job just to satisy the "Rooney Rule"
Yep - I'm an NFL fan too, and loads of black coaches are wheeled in for interviews when they're not serious contenders. Doesn't help them at all. By all means encourage more black and Asian ex-players to go into coaching/management, but any increase in their numbers has to happen organically. Artificial moves like this just don't work.
I was going to ask what would happen if no black/ethnic minority candidate applied for the post. As has been mentioned previously there appears to be very few black etc managers out there. Paul Ince will have to be interviewed for every post going
You would have to "invite" someone to be interviewed to tick all the boxes! To be fair we're light years behind the NFL in terms of numbers of minority/ethnic coaches and the process over there is rubbish, so it would be completely and utterly pointless here. What would we do have Paul Ince, Chris Powell and Chris Hughton interviewing for every available mangers job?
But the quote in the BBC article says they must interview, not just invite for an interview. Unless the BBC got it wrong??
Don't forget Keith Curle! Makes me think of this kid who's apparently handed in a CV to Coventry City discussing his achievements on Football Manager, and some of their fans are talking about him on Sky Blues Talk
How many minority/ethnics turn down a job interview?? They could technically invite anyone to interview for the job. Keith Curle, Leroy Rosenior, Liam Rosenior, Puff Daddy or Ahmed off Springbank. They would only need one to turn up and its job done.
It's nothing to do with Ferris Bueller's principal either...
There are plenty of things that are racist because they are trying not to be. Black History Month is another example.
Isn't there still a quota system in the South African Cricket team? I'd be pissed off if they introduced it here.
