Here's another one - from 'Rockies' in East Park. I remember the Zanzibar Gates being in this spot. please log in to view this image [EDIT: I just noticed this is called 'the Khyber Pass Folly]
Wasn't there a small pond, on the right? That's if the wall on the left foreground is the wall at the base of this: please log in to view this image
Bruce had a hand in building those walls. Give Neil Hudgell a call. Where there's blame there's a claim.
There used to be these 'dungeons' to, but I think they went a long time ago. please log in to view this image
No, Charlesworth - there was a little pond, onthe right as you look at it. There was one called 'Lily Pond', off to the right. Down near where you started the spiral up 'Monkey Puzzle'......... [EDIT: we used to catch newts in Lily Pond]
haha thats where me and my mates used to go and get stoned when we twagged off school ah the good days
That turret was moved to where Viccy Dock estate is. We welded all the railings that surrounded it. Don't know if it's still there though.
I'm not a massive Madonna fan but I thought of this song the instant I saw this photo. This used to be my playground, This used to be my childhood dream. This used to be the place I ran to, Whenever I was in need Of a friend. Why did it have to end? And why do they always say Don't look back? Keep your head held high Don't ask them why Because life is short And before you know You're feeling old, And your heart is breaking Don't hold on to the past. Well that's too much to ask.
As I recall it, to get up to the floor inside it, you had to walk up a stepped single brick wall. No support. You had to be desperate for a crap. Or just, as possibly in your case, weird....
I went to the Royalty Cinema on Southcoates Lane in my ABC Minor days. From 1945 until about 1947 when I started playing Football/Cricket for school on a Saturday morning. Kept my badge until I left the UK. Also joined a club called the Lions in those days (through buying a publication called The Lion?). Wore both the Minors badge and the Lions badge on my lapel. Memory is very hazy on the Lions Club. Anyone else remember this?
The more I see of these pictures of Hull from days gone by the more I despair of the places we have lost, there has been some cracking pictures on these threads so keep them coming as they stir the old memory cells into action. Incidentally the HDM had a feature the other day about some guy who gets into our derelict buildings of today and takes pictures of what its like inside now. It featured the Carlton picture house, Rank/Hovis mill and inevitably the Lord Line building, fascinating stuff.
