The Defence Secretary has warned MPs not to gamble with the UK's security ahead of a vote on renewing the Trident nuclear deterrent. Michael Fallon said the country needed to retain its nuclear capability because of the rise of Daesh terrorism and the threat from Russia. Speaking to Sky News ahead of a vote in the House of Commons later on Monday, he warned Labour MPs the threats to security were too grave for them to "play party politics" with. Theresa May will use her first appearance in the House of Commons as Prime Minister later to warn MPs that "the nuclear threat has not gone away". .................. So whats your view. Keep or scrap?
Keep for me. Apart from security all those poor ****ers at Helensburgh & Coulport would lose their jobs.
We need them in this day and age, unless Corbyn is successful in his endless task to dissolve the world of crime and corruption. I'd be interested to see how many subs are floating around near N.Korea mind, with warheads armed.
Keep -they are a fantastic deterrent. In the early 60's I worked on front line V Bomber Squadron and know how close we were to disaster during the Cuba crisis
This is true. The anti nuke folks wont like these figures. 31bn: The cost of building four new nuclear submarines £10bn: The contingency cost 4: The number of submarines needed to retain a "constant at-sea deterrent" 18,000: The number of eggs taken on each patrol 16: The number of missile tubes on each submarine 4,000 nautical miles: The range of each missile 6,000m per second: The speed at which the missiles travel £25: The extra daily pay crew receive while on patrol
Keep for me. Hopefully the world will never see one used, as even with Russia there's a chance of dialogue to put each other off. But when it comes to N Korea and Daesh, who would do it for fun, we'd need to be able to respond and obliterate them before they did it again. Yes we'd kill countless civilians, but that's what they'd intend to do to us.
They came to Bommer Command 1957-8 if I remember correctly, when I was posted to RAF Marham in 1961 we had 3 Nuke Squadrons and each Squadron had an aircraft on QRA (nuked up and ready to go at 15 minutes). These were scary times-when the Alarm went off you didn' know whether or not it was the real thing.
Definitely renew for me..Unilateral Nuclear Disarmament is not the way to rid the world of these weapons.
I used to be at faslane and coulport (nuke bunkers) hence my user name. But they were Polaris then not Trident. Didnt realise the UK had them so early.
