That would be a good idea if the list didn't include our captain, goalkeeper, top scorer and best performer...

It would be stupid for them to negotiate contracts at Championship wages when they could discuss contracts at Premier League wages nearer the end of the year.

Time to earn Premier League contracts boys <ok>

,, think that's largely irrelevant to a greater degree ... a contract is a contract and they all currently have one (albeit a Championship one with promotion / success bonuses no doubt) that takes them into the close season ... the better they perform whilst under it the better their options will be at the time it comes to renew or move on ...

Absolutely. From a player perspective surely waiting is their best option, in a couple of months(ish) they could be asking for Premier League wages. From a club perspective if we offer contracts now, presumably at Championship wages it would keep the wages bill down, unless some of them are on 'Sven' wages that we don't want to match if we don't get promoted. If that is the case, aren't they likely to be off anyway?

I completely understand the clubs stance with the players but I would get Nigel Pearson on a new contract now

They can negotiate promotion pay rises easily enough.

What it seems to the players is that they are replaceable - i.e. whatever happens, promotion or otherwise, they will be off.

Risk is that they will not care anymore and will concentrate their efforts on finding new clubs if we start to struggle near the end of the season.

Uncertainty isn't going to help anyone. If the club isn't ready or willing to commit to contracts yet, perhaps they could just communicate some intent and/or timescales to the agents. A frequent cause of employee/employer discord is just a lack of communication, this certainly seems to be the case reading the Mercury story on Wes. People, (especially footballers & children) need reassurance. A few PRIVATE conversations outlining what the club would like to do, or at least when they want to decide, depending on our position would be useful.

With all due respect Proud why?... we were ina an automatic promotion spot this time last year and fell away spectacularly ... hopefully that won't happen again but there are no guarantees in football. Nigel hasn't actually acheived anything yet? Ian Holloway and Malky McKay have both achieved more having actually taken teams up to the Premier League (Holloway twice and with far less funds) and Billy Davies and Simon Grayson have achieved as much (if not arguably more) ... indeed Zola also got to a play-off final.

IMHO the same factors that apply to the players apply equally to Nigel - if we should fail to get promoted then at best he will have a Championship contract, at worse, he will be told to seek alternative employment (Dave Jones at Cardiff - Billy Davies at Forest last time around). If we get promoted he'll get a stab at the Prem and a contract that reflects both his achievement in getting up and being in the Prem. If he fails to get us up I can't see why any Prem side would want him? - nor why he would swap us for another Championship club if we don't get up (if the choice is still in his hands)...

... firstly they are replaceable ... if they are not performing ... and it's a fact of footballing life that some will only get limited opportunities should we secure promotion anyway - like all promoted teams ... I think you have your 'risks' the wrong way round personally - they should be desperate to achive and earn a Prem contract rather than have the security of a few more years ion a cushy number n the Championship should it all go tits up again ... but it's all about opinions.

The club run up massive debts through reckless spending. We cant keep relying on the owners to pay stupid amounts out. Look what happened when Sven rewarded players with long term deals. They all went downhill fast

Maybe part of the reason for our form is the players are trying to earn new deals

While I personally would sort out contracts for Wes, Dyer, Kasper and Nugent I understand the club stance

Nigel built us a very good team 1st time around and done exactly the same this team. His recruitment is top class, we play good entertaining attacking football while remaining solid at the back. Other then when Nigel Pearson was manager when was the last time their was a feel good factor here and we achieved good results on a consistent basis? 2002 is the answer

As I said last season, changing managers rarely achieves success. Backing a good manager which Nigel is will achieve long term sustainable success

I'd agree with FF on this. If they aren't good enough for the premier league, the best way to put themselves in the shop window is to be in a winning squad that achieved promotion, worked for Hammond here and also Phillips if you believe the rumors.

Top championship clubs will want players that have been there and done that, having promotion on their CV will do them no harm at all.

This will tell the others that they won't be required, and we need everyone to perform to try and earn a new contract.

Lot of cliches there Proud and most of it, Ii suspect, more wishful thinking - changing managers rarely brings success? ... in the last 5 years Di Matteo won a Champions League, Laudrup won the Capital One Cup, Martinez at Everton and Rodgers at Liverpool - Malky McKay won the Championship with Cardiff .. even Pochettino at Southampton and look how Palace and Sunderland's fortunes have changed under Poyet and Pulis? ... the truth of it is that changing managers sometimes brings success ... just as sticking with one can ... and whilst a club may run up 'massive debt through reckless spending' that is less likely to be the manager's fault but more the commercial or finance director at most clubs ..

    This.

A contract is a legal document and there is nothing to say that a contract cannot be drawn up offering pay scales for Championship, Premiership or even League 1 in the same document. As stated previously, a manager is NOT responsible for agreeing salary rates (not even Sven can be blamed for that). A manager is responsible (along with support staff) for identifying who he wants to bring in to the club. Offer Wes a new contract, and others are pissed off (maybe even NP).

For squad harmony, they all need to be in the same boat. If we don't get promoted, then I cant see NP being offered a new contract (rightly or wrongly).

As long as it doesn´t go pear shaped.

    Basicly...

IF NP fails he´s sacked (no contract), IF he doesn´t he´ll be under pressure to do well in the prem or get sacked (after being given a 1 year rolling contract) ... who´d be a manager Martin.

The rest, IF you´re not good enough for the team now & IF we go up or not you´re sacked (can go on a free)

Those that are good enough for the team now may not be in the plans IF we go up so may get sacked (can go on a free)

The few that are good enough & are in the plans for next season, IF we go up, need to fight like mad for a new contract or you´ll be sacked (let go on a free)

    ...& there´s nothing to worry about ???

FF we're not talking about them clubs. We talking about our own since MON left we have been starved off success

Peter Taylor- failed. Destroyed a great team and spent millions on rubbish
Dave Bassett- took over a sinking ship. We got relegated
Micky Adams- Did a brilliant job for us with administration and La Manga just some of the problems. 1 promotion was followed by relegation. Overall I would consider his time here a success.
Craig Levein- Would have taken us down if he stayed longer. Other then beating Spurs there wasn't any good times under him. Team was littered with SPL crap
Rob Kelly- Did a great job in turning us around but with very little support struggled in his 2nd season
Nigel Worthington- a Short term appointment and he did what we wanted him to do. Keep us up
Martin Allen- spent a bit of money and signed a lot of players off YouTube. He built the squad that took us down
Gary Megson- Poor appointment at the time and the up loyal sod walked out 6 weeks later
Ian Holloway- Tried his very best but was out his depth. Should have kept us up but didn't. League 1 football beckoned
Nigel Pearson- built a very good squad and first manager in a long time who looked like they knew what they was doing. League 1 champions followed by play off semi finalists. A lot of pride was restored and his work played a big part in attracting King Powet to our club
Paulo Sousa- complete car crash. Destroyed Nigel's team and we was getting hit for 6
Sven Goran Eriksson- pissed a lot of money up the wall on ego driven misfit. He never really understood what was required
Nigel Pearson- cleared up Svens mess and built us a team that had the right attitude needed and brought the feel good factor back which followed him to Hull. After being given time he has built us a very good young hungry squad that is now getting the results needed to restore us back into the Prem

To lose Pearson again would be cataspropic. He is the only manager along with Micky Adams to achieve success here. He took the club from its lowest ever point and rebuilt us. Most successful manager in our history statistic wise

What O'Neill did for us was amazing for a club of our size. We was well and truly punching above our weight. As I said last year you probably need to accept 1 year of disappointment to achieve long term sustainable success. And so far I have been proven right

The thing about the players contract if we do go up we will probably only offer contracts to Kasper, Wes, Dyer and Nugent

If we don't go up we will want to keep the ones above but there's a chance Wasilewski and even Waghorn could get another year. FFP will have a massive impact on who stays and who don't plus what we can and can't afford to offer players

Give NP a new contract to show stability will still exist at the club regardless. No better man to lead this club next season in either the Prem or the championship

God oh god, there is some dirt dragged up from the bottom of the barrel there PF. But I must admit I agree with you pritty much on all that you wrote.

"To lose Pearson again would be cataspropic." IF (big IF) we go up he needs to have a full season to see what he´s got to offer as a manager in the prem, but I can see what could happen (MM from Cardiff) if we are struggling come Jan. I´d give NP a 3 1/2 year deal & as much money as we can afford so he can finish the the job he started. If we go up he deserves a real shot at the prem.

But that proves nothing - it's just the more recent history of our club ... many more clubs could show just as much lack of success with a similar number of managers ... doesn't for instance prove that if we'd stuck with a couple of those they wouldn't eventually have found success - Sousa had done well at Swansea and Sven has still achieved more in club management than all of them combined <laugh> ... Nigel is not the messiah .... not yet anyway ... he has an awful lot to prove and promotion is just the first step ... Nigel Adkins and Malky McKay have shown that ... I go back further and in my time, Frank O'Farrell, Jimmy Bloomfield, Jock Wallace, Gordon Milne and Martin O'Neil all came in and turned the club's fortunes around pretty quickly and with pretty impressive style to boot ...
