I really rate McLean, and think he could become really awesome if someone worked on the bits of his game that aren't right atm. He puts the effort in, he runs his arse off, his passing is good, he jumps like a kangeroo, he just seems to lose it in front of goal sometimes.

Im not sure I'd want him on some fruitcake with some cheese and marmite though.

We don't have to spend loads and loads of money, look at Southampton, did they spend hardly any money ? also Reading they never spent money and look at them. Free Agents are defo the way forward. Rosenoir and Koren were both free agents, the only question is, are there any decent free agents out there ?

There are plenty. Jjust checked the list and the quality is mind blowing. Hull City do there best business in the Free market anyway. Rosie and Koren are just 2 examples.

According to OLM, McLean looks like being on his way anyway. As for a ball-playing midfielder see my Cairney thread.

I tend to agree with you in that he has all the necessary attributes, some of the goals he's scored have been great strikes, way better than the other strikers at the club could hit (I'm thinking Forest and Coventry away in particular). The big drawback with him though is his knack of messing things up that seem easy. Like against Coventry when he failed to trap a simple ball on the wing and it went out for a throw. That can happen to anyone but it seems to be him too often and it spoils the rest of his game.

Why with a 7 man subs bench would we not be naming 2 strikers on the bench? Where I don't like people using the fact players can play 3 positions as a way of saying we've got good squad depth over a season, things like Stewart being able to play either wing, and Dudgeon being able to play LB or left wing make it really easy to cover the whole team with a subs bench. (If Dudgeon starts at left back you just need Dawson on the bench and you've got a replacement left back, or left winger if Daws goes LB and we push Dudg forward)

I admit I didn't click the links to see it for myself, but people were quite excited a few weeks ago that the FL had agreed that from next season we'd have a 7 man subs bench again so I thought it had been confirmed.

I still don't think it has been officially confirmed(or if it has, I haven't come across it), but at the recent football league chairman's meeting, I believe there was unanimous support from Championship clubs to go back to seven, but less support at L1 and L2.

I don't see why any team would argue with it. Even if you're not going to use the extra 2, you can just stick some kids there, it doesn't really cause any hassle.

Anyway, I don't understand why they voted to change it to 5 in the first place. It seemed to me as if they all voted to drop the 2 extra subs, but then all started moaning and groaning about it by the time we reached match day 3.

Can't see a problem. 7 subs for the Championship and 5 in L1 and L2 should be the proposal if that's the case.

Does anyone think McClean could be converted to an attacking midfielder? With his engine and workrate in the middle of the park he could help the team play with a bit more energy.

Wasn't it L1 and L2 whose majority pushed it through last year?

If it was, I don't see why they would have a problem with approving the change back if it was only in the Championship that there was going to be 7. They'd get what they wanted, we'd get what we wanted. I know it's pen pushers but surely it's not difficult to get them all to agree to something like that.
